National Institute for Agricultural and Veterinary Research (INIAV, I.P.) – Oeiras
The National Institute for Agricultural and Veterinary Research (INIAV, I.P.) hereby announces a call for applications for a research grant for a graduate-level candidate under the DxHub project – Connecting Greek and Portuguese Innovation Ecosystems to Develop a Hub for Infectious Diseases Diagnostic Solutions at the Point-of-Care – Tackling Cross-border Threats, Grant No. 101186531, funded by the EU Horizon Europe Research and Innovation Programme, under the following conditions:
a) Are enrolled in the 2nd year of a Master’s program;
b) Have curricular experience in laboratory practice in microbiology, bacteriology, and molecular diagnostics;
c) Have knowledge of molecular biology techniques (PCR or Real-time PCR);
d) Have experience in science outreach activities and in presenting communications (oral or poster) at national or international scientific conferences in the field of animal health;
e) Have basic IT skills;
f) Demonstrate good teamwork skills;
g) Are fluent in both Portuguese and English;
h) Hold a driver’s license and are available for travel within the country;
i) Have immediate availability.
Objective: Contribute to the development, implementation, and validation of innovative rapid diagnostic (point-of-care) methodologies for detecting bacterial agents relevant to animal health.
Main activities:
• Support the reception and processing of biological samples from animals;
• Culture, isolation, and characterization of pathogenic bacteria;
• Application and optimization of molecular methods for bacterial detection and identification (PCR, qPCR, LAMP);
• Support in evaluating and validating rapid diagnostic platforms in the lab and semi-operational settings;
• Assist in data analysis, organization, and preparation of technical reports;
• Participate in knowledge dissemination and transfer activities related to the project.
Scientific Research Grant Holder Statute approved by Law No. 40/2004 of 18 August, amended and republished by Decree-Law No. 202/2012 of 27 August, amended by Decree-Law No. 233/2012 of 29 October, Law No. 12/2013 of 29 January, Decree-Law No. 89/2013 of 9 July, and Decree-Law No. 123/2019. Regulation No. 950/2019 of 16 December, which approves the FCT Research Grant Regulations (available at https://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/regulamento ), under Decree-Law No. 123/2019 of 28 August, which updated several articles of the Research Grant Holder Statute.
In accordance with the FCT Research Grant values in Portugal (http://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores ), the monthly stipend is €1040.98. Payment will be made monthly by bank transfer. The grant holder will have personal accident insurance and, if not covered by any social protection scheme, may opt to enroll in voluntary social insurance under the Social Security Contribution Regimes Code.

The selection method (eliminatory) will consist of curriculum evaluation and an interview, if deemed necessary by the jury. Evaluation criteria will be based on a combined assessment of: QA – Academic qualifications; FP and/or EP and/or AP – Professional training, professional experience, and/or profile suitability; E – Interview. If necessary, individual interviews will be held to assess the candidates' suitability.
Ranking formula:
CF = 0.7QA + 0.3(FP, EP, and/or AP) or
CF = 0.6QA + 0.2(FP, EP, and/or AP) + 0.2E
