The Gaspar Frutuoso Foundation, F.P., in collaboration with the Institute of Research and Agrarian and Environmental Technologies, hereby opens a call for applications for the award of one (1) Research Grant (RG) for a Master’s degree holder enrolled in a PhD programme, within the scope of the Program Contract relating to the Institute for Agricultural and Environmental Research and Technologies (IITAA), Ref. UID/00153/2025, approved by the Foundation for Science and Technology, I.P..

This doctoral project aims to study the population of Solen marginatus, a non-indigenous marine species recently identified on Terceira Island, in Praia da Vitória Bay. The objective is to gain an integrated understanding of its distribution and abundance, reproductive cycle, and quality as a food resource, thereby contributing to the understanding of its ecology in the Azores and to the development of appropriate management and conservation measures.

The grant holder’s duties will include:

• Studying the current distribution of the Solen marginatus population in Praia da Vitória Bay;

• Studying the reproductive cycle pattern of Solen marginatus in the Azores and its reproductive success rate;

• Studying the sanitary status and quality of Solen marginatus for human consumption in Azorean waters.

Biology.

3.1 Master’s degree in Biology, Natural Sciences, or related fields;

3.2 Enrolment and registration in a PhD programme taught at the University of the Azores;

3.3 Training and experience in:

a) Marine Biology;

b) Coastal Ecology;

c) Open-circuit SCUBA diving;

3.3 Scientific publications or conference communications in the scientific area of the present call;

3.4 Knowledge of English; and

3.5 Ability to work as part of a team.

Statute of the Research Grant Holder, approved by Law no. 40/2004 of 18 August, amended and republished by Decree-Law no. 202/2012 of 27 August, by Decree-Law no. 89/2013 of 9 July, by Decree-Law no. 233/2012 of 29 October, and by Law no. 12/2013 of 29 January, and amended by Decree-Law no. 123/2019 of 28 August, in its current wording (https://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/estatutobolseiro ), and the Research Grants Regulation of FCT, I.P., currently in force (https://www.fct.pt/fct-atualizou-o-valor-das-bolsas-para-2025/ ).

The work will be carried out at the facilities of the Institute of Research and Agrarian and Environmental Technologies, under the scientific supervision of Nuno Miguel da Silva Ascensão Vaz Álvaro and co-supervision of Cristiana Sofia Alves Mesquita Rodrigues Maduro Dias.

The grant will have a duration of 12 months, with the possibility of renewal for the duration of the respective project task, concluding with the end of the IITAA research project, reference UID/00153/2025, according to the grant holder’s performance, on an exclusive dedication basis, in accordance with the FCT regulations for advanced training of human resources and under Article 5 of the Research Grant Holder Statute.

The grant amount corresponds to €1,309.64, in accordance with the table of grant values awarded directly by FCT, I.P. in Portugal (https://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/regulamento.phtml.pt ), published in Annex I of the Research Grants Regulation of the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), published by Decree-Law no. 350/2019 of 16 December. The grant will be paid monthly by bank transfer. In addition to this amount, Voluntary Social Security contributions corresponding to the 1st contribution bracket will be covered, should the candidate opt for it, as well as personal accident insurance.

The selection methods to be used are as follows: curricular evaluation, weighted at 80%, and the Professional Selection Interview, weighted at 20%. If none of the candidates has an adequate profile (overall evaluation below 50%), the grant will not be awarded.

The Selection Committee is composed of Nuno Miguel da Silva Ascensão Vaz Álvaro, Chair; and full members Cristiana Sofia Alves Mesquita Rodrigues Maduro Dias and Joana Barcelos e Ramos.

The final evaluation results will be publicised through a ranked list according to the final score obtained, and candidates will be notified by email. The provisions of the Administrative Procedure Code apply to this call and, in the event of an unfavourable decision, candidates have a period of 10 working days to submit their comments.

The call is open for a period of 10 working days following the publication of this notice.

c) Curriculum Vitae, dated and signed;

d) Copy of legal identification and taxpayer documents;

e) Copy of the Academic Degree Certificate, including the list of grades obtained;

Holders of academic degrees awarded by foreign higher education institutions must have their degree recognised as required in this Notice, under the terms of Decree-Law no. 66/2018 of 16 August. Recognition of the aforementioned degree must be obtained by the end of the deadline granted for the execution of the contract, should the candidate ranked in an eligible position have obtained the required academic degree abroad;

f) Copy of proof of enrolment and registration in the study cycle required in this Notice;

The supporting documents must be obtained by the end of the deadline granted for the execution of the grant contract.

g) Other documents that the candidate considers relevant for curricular assessment, namely letters of recommendation and documents certifying experience in the requirements mentioned in point 3.3 of this notice.
