Offer Description
A call for applications is open for a Research Grant (BI) within the scope of the project “ecoOLIVAL - Technological innovation to promote the green and digital transition of olive groves in Northeast Portugal”, funded by “Norte 2030 - Northern Regional Program”, under the following conditions:
1. Scientific Area:
Industrial Engineering
2. Admission Requirements:
- Hold a Master's degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or related scientific fields;
- Be enrolled in a Doctoral Program in Intelligent Systems Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, or related scientific fields;
- Suitability of the candidate's training and experience to the objectives of the work to be developed;
- Possess relevant experience in automation, Industry 4.0 technologies, Industry 4.0 maturity models. Proficiency in English (written and oral communication) will also be valued.
3. Work Plan:
This work plan includes the development of the following main tasks:
i) Analysis of the requirements of the case study related to olive production.
ii) Conducting a literature review on digital technologies and maturity analysis models for solutions aligned with precision agriculture.
iii) Definition of a technological maturity model to determine the most suitable digital technologies to improve and optimize olive production, including the definition of key indicators.
iv) Application of the methodology to the case study.
v) Writing technical reports and scientific publications.
4. Objectives:
Study of the technological maturity of solutions aligned with digital transformation to improve and optimize olive production in a precision agriculture context.
5. Applicable legislation and regulations:
Statute of the Scientific Research Fellow, approved by Law No. 40/2004, of August 18, as amended; FCT, I.P. Research Grant Regulations in force (https://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/docs/RegulamentoBolsasFCT2019.pdf ); Regulation No. 522/2020, published in Diário da República, 2nd series, No. 113, of June 12 – Research Grant Regulations of the Polytechnic Institute of Bragança.
6. Workplace and scientific supervision:
The work will be carried out in the Research and Innovation Laboratory of CeDRI (Research Centre for Digitalization and Intelligent Robotics) of the Polytechnic Institute of Bragança, under the scientific supervision of Professor Paulo Leitão.
7. Grant duration:
The grant will have an initial duration of 12 months, with a planned start date of 19/01/2026 (with the possibility of renewal up to a maximum of 24 months, including the initial period).
8. Monthly maintenance allowance:
The grant amount corresponds to €1,309.64, according to the table of values for grants awarded by FCT, I.P. in the country. Grant holders will benefit from personal accident insurance and, if they are not covered by any social protection scheme, they may ensure the exercise of their right to social security by joining the voluntary social security scheme, under the terms provided for in the Code of Contribution Schemes of the Social Security System. The grant amount will be paid monthly by bank transfer.
9. Selection methods and their weighting:
The selection methods to be used will be the following: a) Curriculum evaluation and its suitability for the work in question (40%); b) Experience, according to the desired profile (40%); c) Scientific curriculum, considering publications and participation in projects (20%). The Jury may call candidates for an interview if it wishes to clarify the CV for a better evaluation of the criteria defined in Selection Methods. The jury may not award the grant if the candidates' classification is lower than 9.5.
10. Composition of the Selection Jury:
The Jury will consist of Doctors Paulo Leitão (president), José Barbosa (member), Flávia Pires (member), and João Paulo Coelho (alternate).
11. Method of publication/notification of results:
Communications and final evaluation results will be published through the IPB application submission portal or, if necessary, by email notification.
12. Application deadline:
The competition is open from 02/01/2026 to 15/01/2026.
13. Application Submission Method:
Applications may be submitted through the IPB application portal (http://concursos.ipb.pt ), including the following documents:
a) Curriculum Vitae;
b) Academic qualifications certificate;
c) Letter of motivation;
d) Other documents deemed relevant for the application assessment.
Documents proving academic degrees or diplomas, or registration with an academic degree or diploma, may be waived during the application phase, being replaced by a declaration of honor from the candidate. Verification of this condition is mandatory during the grant contracting phase. Academic degrees obtained in foreign countries require recognition by a Portuguese institution in accordance with Decree-Law No. 66/2018 of August 16 and Ordinance No. 33/2019 of January 25. Presentation of the recognition is mandatory for signing the contract.
14. Deadlines and procedures for complaints and appeals:
If the decision to be taken is unfavorable to the granting of the requested grant, candidates have 10 working days, after the date of publication of the evaluation results, to express their opinion, if they wish, in a prior hearing, in accordance with the provisions of the Administrative Procedure Code. An appeal against the final decision may be made to the President of the IPB within 15 working days of notification.

Skills/Qualifications
Candidates must have a Master degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or related areas, and be registered in a doctoral program in Intelligent Systems Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering or related areas.
Specific Requirements
i) Candidates should have experience in automation, Industry 4.0 technologies and maturity assessment model for Industry 4.0, ii) Relevance of the candidate’s academic background and research experience to the objectives of the work to be developed, iii) Relevant scientific publications in indexed journals and conferences. Mastery of the English language (written and oral communication) will also be valued.
