PhD position

We welcome you as an applicant for a position as a PhD Candidate at the Department of Sociology. The position is for a fixed term of four years, with 25% of the total working hours to be spent at the department. The place of work for this position is Bergen.

The Department of Sociology belongs to the Faculty of Social Sciences and is part of a large social science environment that also includes collaboration with other sociology environments nationally and internationally. The department has extensive teaching responsibilities, including a one-year program, a bachelor's and master's program, and a teacher-training program in sociology. The work at the department is based on long research traditions and today represents a broad research profile, including research on welfare, youth, family, life course, mobility, inequality, migration, gender, class, elites, and education.

Qualifications and personal qualities:
  • Master's degree in sociology. The degree must be completed before the application deadline. 
  • The minimum requirement for applicants is normally a B or higher, both for the master's thesis and for the master's degree as a whole.
  • Ability to work independently, have a high work capacity and enthusiasm for research. 
  • Motivation to teach our subjects, both at BA and MA level. 
  • The applicant must be proficient in both written and oral English
  • Personal and interpersonal skills will be emphasized. Ambition and potential will also be taken into account when assessing candidates.

The place of work for this position is Bergen, and the work requires that you are physically present at the Department of Sociology on a daily basis.

Suitable candidates will be invited for an interview. 

The language of instruction is usually Norwegian, but some of the teaching is also given in English.


About the PhD position:

About the PhD position:

The total scholarship period is four years. At least three full-time equivalents must be dedicated to doctoral work. The rest of the time will be set aside for other career-promoting work that will help the employee qualify for relevant careers that require research expertise. If you have previously been employed in a recruitment position, a deduction may be made from the employment period.

About the PhD research program: 

As a scholarship recipient, you must participate in an approved educational program for a PhD degree within a time frame of three years. It is a prerequisite that you meet the requirements for admission to the PhD program at the University of Bergen. For admission, you must have completed a master's degree. The scope of the master's degree must normally be 120 credits and be based on a bachelor's degree of 180 credits (normally 2+3 years), or an integrated master's degree of 300 credits (5 years). The master's degree must normally include an independent project worth at least 30 credits. The master's degree must normally be in the subject area for which admission is sought.

  • Position as research fellow (code 1017) with an annual salary of NOK 568,700 gross. Automatic salary progression for up to 4 years with a 3% annual increase.

The project:

A brief project description (5-8 pages) must be submitted with the application. The project description must explain the topic, problem(s) and choice of theory and method. The description must include a progress plan for the various parts of the research work. Upon admission, the project description will form the basis for admission to the PhD program. The faculty has prepared guidelines for writing the project description .

  • If you have a master's degree from a foreign educational institution, or a 2-year discipline-based master's degree (or equivalent) in a field other than the one you wish to be affiliated with, you may be asked to submit an overview of the curriculum for the master's degree you have obtained
