Description/content

The Research School of Advanced Photon Science (RS-APS) is the doctoral research school of the Helmholtz Institute Jena. The institute was established on the physics campus of the Friedrich Schiller University Jena in 2009, and it is a division of the GSI Helmholtz Center for Heavy Ion Research, which is headquartered near Darmstadt. In this way, the institute connects the large-scale research facilities available at the Helmholtz Center with the established expertise of university working groups. RS-APS provides training for the next generation of scientists, working at the cutting-edge research infrastructures of today and tomorrow.

RS-APS maintains a close collaboration with the Helmholtz Graduate School HGS-HIRe for FAIR (the umbrella school for PhD students at GSI) as well as the graduate school of the Abbe Center of Photonics.

Our members therefore enjoy additional access to all events and courses hosted by our partners.

RS-APS currently supports about 60 doctoral students in Jena, as well as in Darmstadt, Frankfurt and Hamburg.

Scientific Profile:

  • Extreme Electromagnetic Fields
  • Warm Dense Matter
  • Coupling of Intense Light to Matter
  • Measurement techniques and diagnostics (x-ray optics, lasers, spectrometers, detectors, etc.)

Course organisation

RS-APS offers a structured PhD education which consists of supervision, education and support:

  • Regular PhD committee meetings to track the progress of the work and address problems
  • One soft skill or transferable skill training unit is mandatory each year.
  • Academic courses, such as lecture weeks or summer schools, must be attended once a year.
  • Participating in the seminars of the research school during the semester
  • Four SWS (semester hours) of teaching duty in the physics department
International elements
  • Projects with partners in Germany and abroad
Description of other international elements
  • To facilitate scientific and international exchange, each member is granted an annual personal travel budget.
  • Optional participation in the International Summer Student Programme of GSI Helmholtz Center
  • International tutors during annual RS-APS Lecture Week
