Project Description: Biosensing Using Nanomaterials for Liquid Biopsy Applications

The PhD project aims to develop next-generation nanomaterial-based biosensing platforms for multiplexed analysis of liquid biopsies, targeting applications in:

  • Diagnosis and prognosis of infectious diseases
  • Monitoring of kidney function and disease progression

Key Research Objectives

  • Design and engineering of novel nanomaterial-based sensing architectures
  • Integration of carbon nanotubes, graphene oxide, and metal nanoparticles into biosensing devices
  • Development of multiplexed detection strategies for clinically relevant biomarkers
  • Translation of sensing concepts toward clinically relevant liquid biopsy samples

Methodological Scope

The project will involve a broad range of experimental techniques, including:

  • Nanomaterial synthesis and surface functionalization
  • Structural, chemical, and electrical characterization
  • Micro- and nanoscale device fabrication and assembly
  • Biosensing performance evaluation in synthetic samples and real patient samples
  • Data analysis and validation for diagnostic applications

This interdisciplinary project bridges materials science, nanotechnology, biomedical engineering, and translational medicine.

Applicants profile

Applicants should have:

  • A Master’s degree (or equivalent) in materials science, chemistry, physics, biomedical engineering, or a related field.
  • Strong interest in biosensing and nanomaterials
  • Hands-on experience with experimental laboratory work
  • Excellent communication skills and motivation for international research
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams

Conditions

During their time in Germany, the candidate will receive a salary according to German public service salary scale level TV-L 13 (50%).
