The RWTH Aachen University (Germany) and the Institute of Materials Research and Engineering at the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (Singapore) invite applications from highly motivated and talented candidates for a Joint PhD Position in Biosensing and Nanotechnology.
This unique international PhD program offers outstanding training at the interface of nanotechnology, biosensing, and biomedical diagnostics, embedded in two world-class research environments in Germany and Singapore.
PhD Program Structure
- PhD registration and degree awarding institution: RWTH Aachen University
- Duration: 3 years
- Research split:
- 2 years at the Institute of Materials Research and Engineering (Singapore)
- 1 year at RWTH Aachen University (Germany)

Project Description: Biosensing Using Nanomaterials for Liquid Biopsy Applications
The PhD project aims to develop next-generation nanomaterial-based biosensing platforms for multiplexed analysis of liquid biopsies, targeting applications in:
- Diagnosis and prognosis of infectious diseases
- Monitoring of kidney function and disease progression
Key Research Objectives
- Design and engineering of novel nanomaterial-based sensing architectures
- Integration of carbon nanotubes, graphene oxide, and metal nanoparticles into biosensing devices
- Development of multiplexed detection strategies for clinically relevant biomarkers
- Translation of sensing concepts toward clinically relevant liquid biopsy samples
Methodological Scope
The project will involve a broad range of experimental techniques, including:
- Nanomaterial synthesis and surface functionalization
- Structural, chemical, and electrical characterization
- Micro- and nanoscale device fabrication and assembly
- Biosensing performance evaluation in synthetic samples and real patient samples
- Data analysis and validation for diagnostic applications
This interdisciplinary project bridges materials science, nanotechnology, biomedical engineering, and translational medicine.
Applicants profile
Applicants should have:
- A Master’s degree (or equivalent) in materials science, chemistry, physics, biomedical engineering, or a related field.
- Strong interest in biosensing and nanomaterials
- Hands-on experience with experimental laboratory work
- Excellent communication skills and motivation for international research
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams
Conditions
During their time in Germany, the candidate will receive a salary according to German public service salary scale level TV-L 13 (50%). During their time in Singapore, the student will receive a stipend directly from the Agency for Science, Technology, and Research (A*STAR, Singapore) of 2,700 SGD / month. Furthermore, A*STAR will provide the student with one-off relocation allowance (1,000 SGD), one-off airfare grant (1,500 SGD), one conference allowance, and housing subsidy.
