Objective
The programme aims at fostering strong, internationally oriented higher education systems in Jordan with the capacity to contribute to sustainable development. To this end, scholarships are granted for development-related Master studies for individuals who plan to pursue a career in teaching and/or research at a higher education institution in the Middle East.
By training future academic and professional leaders, the programme contributes to the following long-term impacts:
- Qualified professionals’ involvement in the solution of development-related problems in the Middle East
- Graduates strengthening education and research in the Middle East
- Structural strengthening and regional networking of partner institutions and partner universities
To achieve these long-term impacts, the following outcomes have been formulated as programme objectives:
Programme objective 1: Graduates have qualified to take over responsible positions in their (or for their) region of origin.
Programme objective 2: The participation of women and underprivileged groups is reinforced.
Programme objective 3: Organizational, financial and personal capacities of partner institutions are strengthened.
As part of the "In-Country/In-Region Scholarship Programme“, DAAD offers scholarships for Master studies. The programme is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and aims at university staff in the first line, without neglecting the public sector demand of academically trained personnel.
Who can apply?
The target group are graduates from Yemen with a first academic degree who want to pursue a Master’s programme (thesis track) in Jordan.
What can be funded?
The In-Region Scholarship Programme supports full-time studies in subject areas with strong relevance to national development.
The scholarships at the two selected Jordanian universities are available in the following fields of postgraduate programmes (please pay attention to the different language requirements, see below):
Jordan University of Science and Technology, Irbid (JUST)
- M.Sc. Computer Engineering*
- M.Sc. Network Engineering and Security*
- M.Sc. Radiologic Technology**
- M.Sc. Medical Laboratory Sciences**
- M.Sc. Computer Science**
- M.Sc. Data Science**
- M.Sc. Physical Therapy**
- M.Sc. Nursing - Adult Acute Care**
- M.Sc. Nursing - Community Health Nursing**
- M.Sc. Nursing - Nursing Services Administration**
- M.Sc. Nursing - Acute Care Pediatric Nursing**
German Jordanian University, Amman (GJU)
- M.Sc. Environmental and Renewable Energy Engineering*
- M.Sc. Logistic Management**
- M.A. Social Work for Refugees and Migrants**
- Master of Business Administration Management**
Please note the following DAAD’s language requirements regarding the above-mentioned study programmes:
* IELTS at least 6.5 or TOEFL (IBT) at least 90 (TOEFL home edition or IELTS indicator (online test) are also accepted)
** IELTS at least 5.5 or TOEFL (IBT) at least 69 (TOEFL home edition or IELTS indicator (online test) are also accepted)
Duration of the funding
The duration of the Master programme is generally two years at the GJU and three years at the JUST and is usually starting in September of the following year. The mentioned standard period of study and the start date are based on the agreement between the host university and the DAAD.
Please note that the maximum duration of the scholarship is based on the time that is left until the scholarship holder has reached the regular period of studies in that programme; i.e., if you apply for a DAAD scholarship starting in your second year of studies of a two-year programme, the maximum duration of the scholarship will be one year.
Scholars have to submit documents with a satisfactory study progress before the end of the first funding year in order to receive further funding. If this assessment shows that you will successfully complete your programme within the granted period of time, the scholarship will continue as planned.
Value
The scholarship covers:
- Tuition fees (Master Thesis Track)*** per semester
- Monthly scholarship payment: 600 EUR
- Travel allowance at the beginning and the end of your scholarship (proof of arrival must be provided): 530 EUR
- Study and Research allowance: 460 EUR
- Printing allowance: 400 EUR
- Monthly family allowances for spouses (upon request): 240 EUR
*** Tuition fees will be paid per semester directly to the host university, including payments towards your health insurance. Please note that in some cases not all fees and costs that are mentioned on the official fee structure of the host institution can be covered by DAAD in full, e.g. if the agreement with the funding organisation prevents us from funding certain items in the fee structure or if items that are included in the fees are supposed to be covered through the individual scholarship benefits. DAAD will transfer the fees directly to the host institution.
The DAAD will endeavour to transfer the first monthly payment to your bank account as quickly as possible after the beginning of your scholarship. Processing the first transfer of funds may take some time.
Payments cannot be made prior of the scholarship start date and the commencement of studies at the host institution. Furthermore, additional benefits that are not listed in this call for applications cannot be granted.
Scholarships can only be awarded subject to the budget of the ministry providing the funds.
Selection
All applicants apply via the DAAD online portal not later than the deadline.
After formal evaluation of the DAAD regarding the completeness and correctness of the applications, an independent selection committee will evaluate the formally correct applications. The host institution has the right of veto. The DAAD reserves the right of final selection.
Further information
DAAD In-Region scholarship holders are also
a) encouraged to apply for a short-term research stay in Germany for 3 up to 6 months during their In-Region scholarship.
Please note:
- The short-term research stay in Germany should preferably be announced in the application for the regular scholarship and can only be awarded if the necessary financial means are available.
- If you would like to apply, please note that the funding period for a short-term research stay in Germany is part of the In-Region programme and the regular study period of the programme may not be exceeded by the short-term research stay in Germany, this must be included in the regular study period of the In-Region programme.
The short-term research scholarship includes:
- monthly scholarship payment for living costs
- health/accident/personal liability insurance
- flat-rate travel allowance
b)
invited to apply for different Summer Schools in Germany (four weeks).

Submitting an application
General information on the application via DAAD portal
You can access the DAAD portal by clicking "Application portal" at the end of the page. Here you will find an online application form in which you can enter your application data.
This is what you have to do:
1. Register in the DAAD portal (Read notes about registering in the portal >> )
2. Request recommendation form
You can generate the recommendation form in the DAAD Portal as a writable PDF under 'Request recommendation form'. It can only be generated during the application period. Please send it to your university teacher and ask him or her to complete the form in full. When you have received it back, upload it in the portal under 'Letter of Recommendation'.
3. Applying online in the DAAD portal (Read notes on applying in the portal >> )
- Prepare application documents
- If necessary, translate documents (unless they are already in German or English).
- Scan paper documents and save in PDF format. You can only upload PDF files to the portal.
- Fill out the application form and upload the application documents to the portal in PDF format. Translations, if applicable, should be uploaded together with the document issued in the original language.
- Submit the application online.
