Offer Description

The work proposed for this post PHD position involves studying and developing switching circuits based on phase change materials (PCMs). The research will primarily consist of performing electromagnetic simulations of N-to-M switching circuits of increasing complexity. These calculations will allow for the sizing of these components and the design of a set of masks necessary for their implementation. These circuits will operate between 10 and 45 GHz to take advantage of the excellent performance of PCM switches at very high frequencies. Target applications include measurement instruments, antenna signal control, and test circuits for active components such as transistors. Several topologies of these switching matrices have already been studied in the laboratory, using coplanar propagation lines, which are simple to fabricate and easy to integrate with PCM switches.

However, as the complexity of the matrices increases, it becomes necessary to integrate elements such as RF line crossings, which are very difficult to implement using coplanar technology. We have demonstrated in the laboratory that it is possible to fabricate air bridges above the switching circuits, enabling the realization of these electrical crossings above the coplanar lines, in addition to the initial fabrication process, which does not need to be modified. The electrical behavior of these crossings will then be studied through electromagnetic simulations and optimized to achieve the best possible performance.

In a second phase, the postdoctoral researcher will fabricate the circuits designed in the first phase. They will be able to draw upon the experience acquired by the laboratory and the equipment at the fabrication facility. The circuits will be tested on the laboratory's measurement platform to evaluate the performance achieved using the technological elements proposed in this project.
