PhD Position Description
Estonian Maritime Academy (EMERA) at the Tallinn University of Technology (Taltech) invites applications for 1-2 open PhD position(s) on the topics related to the field of Nautical Sciences. The position is related to the Nautical Sciences Research Group at EMERA.
The candidate(s) will be conducting research on an identified topic related to nautical sciences. The candidates are expected to follow a detailed and outlined research plan leading to clear knowledge outcomes and the award of the PhD degree. The tasks could include conducting simulator-based experiments, collecting and analyzing human performance and psychophysiological data, and developing models of human–machine collaboration for safe and efficient navigation. The candidate will present findings at international conferences, publish in peer-reviewed journals, and actively contribute to the research group’s collaborative projects with industry and academic partners.
Requirements
We are looking for highly motivated candidate(s) with:
- A Master’s degree in nautical sciences, maritime studies/operations, human factors/ergonomics, or a related discipline.
- Knowledge of and interest in the international maritime industry.
- Experience with academic publishing (advantageous but not mandatory).
- Good qualitative and/or quantitative research skills, with the ability to analyze and interpret complex data. This can be demonstrated by submitted certifications, academic papers or transcripts.
- Proficiency in written and spoken English.
The candidate(s) should submit a research plan for the topic (5 pages maximum, including references), detailing the overall research and data collection strategy.

About the University and the department
Estonian Maritime Academy (EMERA), a structural unit of Tallinn University of Technology (TalTech), provides multi-level education and does professional research in marine sciences and fields related to them, making it the only competence center of its kind in Estonia.
TalTech Estonian Maritime Academy teaches in 4 higher education programmes and two master's and one doctoral programme. More specifically, it has the doctoral Studies program in Engineering Sciences (main specialty: maritime) in cooperation with the Faculty of Engineering. It has established research groups in areas such as – Blue economy & aquatic resources, waterways safety management, nautical sciences, green maritime technology, maritime transport, and a center of maritime cybersecurity.
The Nautical Sciences Research Group at the TalTech Estonian Maritime Academy, investigates the human, operational, and technological dimensions of maritime navigation in an era shaped by automation, digitalization, and artificial intelligence. Their work emphasizes the human element in maritime operations, focusing on simulation-based training, policy and regulatory frameworks, human–machine collaboration on ship bridges, and psychophysiological performance measurements of navigators.
