About this scholarship

The Walker, Newman & Associates Scholarship (Scholarship ) was established to support and encourage students in the Centre for Aboriginal Studies (CAS) Pre-Science and Engineering Enabling Course. It is the hope that by supporting students while in the bridging course, it will enable more First Nations students to pursue their undergraduate degree in science and engineering courses at Curtin.

The Scholarship will provide the following support for up to one year:

  • A total value of up to $5,000 paid as a cash stipend of:
    • $1,250 per semester
    • An additional one-off cash payment of $2,500 provisional upon the following:
      • Completion of the Indigenous Pre-Science and Engineering Enabling Course
      • Enrolment into a Science and Engineering undergraduate course in semester 1, 2027

The amount can be used at the recipient's discretion to contribute towards education related expenses.


Scholarship Details

Indigenous Pre-Science and Engineering Enabling Course


Applicants must meet all of the following criteria to be considered eligible for the Scholarship:

  • Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent
  • Enrolled full-time (100 credits) in the first semester of the Indigenous Pre-Science and Engineering Enabling Course at Curtin University in semester 1, 2026*
  • Must have intention to enrol into a Science and Engineering undergraduate course after the completion of Indigenous Pre-Science and Engineering Enabling Course

*You must have 0 credits completed towards this course to be considered eligible  


Application process

Step 1: Access application form

  • Application form can be accessed via the ‘My Studies’ tab in OASIS or via the ‘Apply Online’ button on the top right-hand side of this page
  • Please note that this link will direct you to the general "Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Scholarship Program" application form. Once you submit your application, you will then be considered for all scholarships that you are eligible for in this round.

Step 2: Complete

  • Complete the application form online
  • Application form can be saved at any point of the process
  • Tips on how to complete your application can be found on the ‘Applying for scholarships’ link on the scholarships website

Step 3: Submit

  • Closing date is listed at the top of the page and within the Scholarships Channel (Student OASIS)
  • Incomplete applications will not be assessed
  • Once submitted, application status will change to submitted

Step 4: Receipt

  • Application receipt will be sent to student email once application has been submitted

Step 5: Assessment

  • Applications will be assessed by an assessment panel using the following criteria:
    • Responses to questions in application form
    • Preference will be given to students with a passion for IT or Electrical Engineering

Step 6: Outcome

  • All successful and unsuccessful applicants notified of their outcome via the Scholarships Channel (Student OASIS) within 8-9 weeks of the scholarship closing date

Step 7: Acceptance

  • Successful applicants must accept the terms and conditions via the Scholarship Channel (Student OASIS) by the deadline

Please note:

  • Scholarship will be awarded if there are applicants of sufficient merit


Enrolment Requirements

Recipients must meet all of the following:

  • Remain enrolled in initial course of study
  • Maintain a full time study load of at least 100 credit points each study period at Curtin University
  • Maintain a course weighted average (CWA) of at least 50 each study period
  • Fail no more than one unit per study period
  • Not be in receipt of any other scholarship from the same funding source and/or for the same purpose
