Senior Foundation Accountant

Summary

The purpose of this position is to support all aspects of the primary business functions, financial reporting, and associated accounting and tax related activities for The BGSU Foundation, Inc. This position will assist the manager with the day-to-day accounting, financial, and compliance operations for The BGSU Foundation, Inc. This position also shares responsibility for the preparation and filing of Federal and multi-state tax and charitable solicitation compliance filings.


Essential Functions

Assist with monthly and annual closing and related financial reporting, including, but not limited to:


  • Preparation of account reconciliations on a timely basis, including identifying and analyzing variances, when applicable

  • Investment summary and analysis 
  • Capital project funding analysis 
  • Preparation of standard and non-standard journal entries, including assessment of the non-endowed, restricted gift fee
  • Calculation of endowment earnings, admin fee, and spendable allocations
  • Assist in financial statement preparation
  • Perform analytical procedures including investigation of unusual transactions or unexpected variances on monthly financial reports

  • Assist the manager to develop & monitor the Foundation’s departmental operating budgets, in conjunction with department managers

  • Prepare other reports throughout the year as requested
  • Assure proper accounting procedures are maintained throughout the Foundation


Performance of assigned day-to-day business transactions and financial activities including, but not limited to:

  • Department reimbursement requests from Foundation funds 
  • Falcon’s Purch and Chrome River charges to Foundation funds 
  • Process fund-to-fund transfer requests
  • Work closely with all University departments and individuals to ensure that both sides of transactions are properly treated (assets/liabilities, due to/due from (inter-fund) as well as payables/receivables (intra-fund); ensure proper revenue and expense recognition


Fund maintenance, including, but not limited to:


  • Enter new funds and updated information for existing funds into Raiser’s Edge upon request from Donor Relations & Stewardship

  • Upload fund agreement and all applicable documentation into OnBase

  • Complete FMS Project and Activity creation steps on following day after nightly process

  • Upon request of management, close (inactivate) funds in Raiser’s Edge and projects in FMS


Assist with the annual external audit of the stand-alone financial statements for The BGSU Foundation, Inc. including preparation of audit work papers, complex financial analyses, financial statements and footnote disclosures. Prepare and transmit all required tax and state fundraising registration compliance filings in a timely manner.
 

Assist manager on testing of all systems related to the Foundation, including technology upgrades and initiatives. User role configuration and upgrade testing are essential components. Current platforms are PeopleSoft FMS, ODS/Web Report Library, Blackbaud Raiser’s Edge NXT, GiveCampus, Paciolan, among others.
 

All other duties as assigned or as required ensuring the continued successful financial operation of The BGSU Foundation, Inc.


Minimum Qualifications

The following Degree is required:

  • Bachelor's Degree
The following Experience is required:
  • 4 years of general accounting
  • 2 years with external or internal audits
The following Licenses, certifications, or registrations are preferred:
  • CPA or eligible to sit for the CPA exam


Additional Information

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Thorough knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP)
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience of FASB reporting requirements; experience preparing financial statements
  • Knowledgeable of principles of fund accounting and GASB requirements
  • Knowledge of audit functions – operational, compliance, and financial
  • Ability to work within business processes, systems of internal controls, and management reporting structures
  • Knowledge of non-profit related taxation (Forms 990, 990T)
  • Ability to orchestrate multiple activities simultaneously and work well with limited supervision; evidence of ability to see projects through to completion
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal University departments and external partners; ability to work with members of the accounting department staff and provide context and translation for Foundation activities
  • Ability to direct the work of others who do not directly report to you
  • Ability to learn new systems, develop financial / accounting procedure / process changes and then lead and document the change of process
  • Ability to identify problems, develop solutions, and implement change
  • Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills

  • Advanced knowledge and experience with spreadsheets (e.g. Excel)
