Overview
The School of Environmental and Biological Sciences, located on the George H. Cook Campus, is one of the largest schools of Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey. We pursue excellence in research, teaching, and outreach in areas of study that address the biological spectrum from molecules to ecosystems. Our emphasis is on both the fundamental sciences and the social and human dimensions. We offer 21 undergraduate majors, including plant and animal sciences, microbiology, biotechnology, agriculture and food systems, landscape architecture, food and nutritional sciences, ecology and evolution, marine science and oceanography, environmental sciences and meteorology, human ecology, entomology, and environmental economics.
In addition to instruction in the classroom, field, and laboratory, our students have opportunities for experiential learning on and off campus, including a growing emphasis on international experiences through short- and long-term study abroad. Students also have access to a robust program of applied research and outreach hosted by the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station laboratories, farms, business incubators, and marine stations throughout the state.
Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Research Assistant for the Department of Plant Biology within the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences. The position supports research activities involving UAV-based remote sensing. This position reports to the Remote Sensing Associate.
Among the key duties of the position are the following:
  • Uploads raw imagery.
  • Conducts weekly drone flights at two farm locations (New Brunswick and Freehold, NJ).
  • Performs data management and processing workflows.
  • Maintains research image archives.
  • Generates orthomosaics.
  • Organizes and backs up large geospatial datasets.
  • Operates software pipelines involving PowerShell- and Python-based tools.
  • Maintains flight equipment (UAVs, sensors, batteries) including logging, and routine operational checks.
FLSA Nonexempt
Salary Details $17 - $22/hourly

Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in STEM, or an equivalent combination of education and/or relevant academic experience with exposure to areas such as drones, remote sensing, GIS, plant biology, agronomy, environmental science, computer science, or closely related fields.

Certifications/Licenses
  • A valid driver’s license would be required for this position.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Computer literate, with comfort navigating file systems, performing basic troubleshooting, and learning command-line workflows (PowerShell and/or Python).
  • Ability to work both collaboratively and independently with minimal supervision once trained.
  • Strong attention to detail in data handling, file naming, and documentation.
  • Demonstrated interest in developing skills in UAV operation, geospatial data processing, remote sensing analytics, and turfgrass research methods.
Preferred Qualifications
  • FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate.
  • Candidates without certification may receive support for exam preparation and testing contingent on satisfactory progress.
  • Prior command-line experience is preferred, though training will be provided.
Equipment Utilized
Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • Farm flights scheduled around solar noon (approximately 10:30 AM–2:00 PM).
  • Travel between research farms in New Brunswick and Freehold, New Jersey.
Special Conditions
  • Appointment is up to 12 months with potential extension depending on funding.
  • Clean Driving Record.
