Job Description Summary:
The Department of Defense (DoD) National Disaster Medical System (NDMS) Pilot Program is a federally funded initiative designed to strengthen national medical surge capacity through improved coordination between military and civilian health systems. The National Capital Region (NCR) is one of eight pilot sites tasked with developing, testing, and evaluating models for medical response to mass casualty and disaster scenarios.
This position is hosted by George Washington University and works closely with the National Center for Disaster Medicine and Public Health (NCDMPH), DoD, HHS, VA, DHS, and local public/private healthcare entities.
The Research Assistant will support research, data collection, administrative, and communications efforts for the NCR NDMS Pilot Program. This is an ideal role for a graduate student or early-career professional with an interest in public health preparedness, health systems research, or disaster response.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Assist in the collection, organization, and analysis of program data and qualitative feedback
  • Conduct background research, literature reviews, and environmental scans
  • Support the preparation of reports, meeting summaries, briefing materials, and academic publications
  • Help coordinate logistics for meetings, trainings, and stakeholder engagements
  • Assist with maintenance of project files, contact lists, and shared documents
  • Provide general administrative and project support to the NCR Field Implementation Team (FIT)

  • Demonstrated interest in public health preparedness, health systems, or military–civilian collaboration
  • Strong writing, organizational, and communication skills
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and collaborative tools like Zoom or Teams

Hiring Range $17.95 - $32.56/hr
Work Schedule: Must be available to work on Thursdays between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. (required). Additional optional hours may be scheduled on Monday (9 a.m.–12 p.m.), Wednesday (9 a.m.–12:30 p.m.), and Friday (9 a.m.–1 p.m.).
