Position Overview
We seek a postdoctoral research associate to carry out in vivo and ex vivo experimentation in rats in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Kansas. The Department of Chemistry consists of a well-rounded research community with cutting-edge expertise in a wide variety of modern disciplines including analytical chemistry, organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, physical chemistry, materials chemistry, and biochemistry. Our research group develops methods to measure neuronal function with the goal of using these methods to understand mechanisms of neurological disease. As a Postdoctoral Research Associate, you will play a central role in the development and validation of novel biosensing arrays used to measure real-time changes in chemical levels in living brain tissue.
Working in our highly interdisciplinary research environment, you will have the chance to collaborate with researchers both within and outside the Johnson lab. You will join a supportive group who will assist you in achieving your career goals, whether traditional or alternative. We recognize the unique challenges faced by postdoctoral research associates and are committed to providing a flexible work environment that supports your well-being and personal responsibilities. Living in Lawrence, KS, you will enjoy a vibrant urban-suburban atmosphere surrounded by beautiful landscapes, a thriving cultural scene, and low cost of living.
The initial appointment for this position will be for 12 months. Additional 12-month extension will be available based on performance and/or availability of funds
Job Description
Your responsibilities will include effectively communicating with a team of researchers in academia and industry, designing and implementing optogenetics experiments in rodents, analyzing data, and communicating project findings through presentations and publications.
80% - Carry out primary, NIGMS-relevant research in a supportive, mentored environment. Projects will involve using array biosensors to measure multiple neurotransmitters simultaneously. You will design and execute experiments to validate array biosensors in ex vivo preparations. Techniques that will be used include rodent surgeries, injections for the purpose of optogenetic measurements, and electrode calibrations and measurements.
20% - Candidates will be expected to interface with team members at Pinnacle Technology Inc. to optimize biosensors and maximize the probability of success. These communications are expected to take the form of brief, daily communications as well as presentations at regular group meetings. Candidates will also be expected to present research at local, regional, and international conferences and write manuscripts for publication.
