Postdoctoral Associate

Applied Economics and Policy

Cornell SC Johnson College of Business Cornell University

The Cornell SC Johnson College of Business invites applicants for a Postdoctoral Associate position for a 1-year term (with the possibility of renewal for an additional year) in our Applied Economics and Policy (AEP) area, with a school affiliation in the Dyson School of Applied Economics and Management. The Postdoctoral Associate will contribute to quantifying the private value of improved soil health across the U.S. using econometric techniques and combination of large-scale datasets. The start date of this position could be as early as March 1, 2026, but a latter start date is possible.  The position will be based in Ithaca, NY under the supervision of Prof. Ariel Ortiz-Bobea (Dyson) and in coordination with Dr. Joseph Amsili, Director of Cornell’s Soil Health Program.

The ideal candidate will possess a PhD in economics, agricultural and resource economics, data science or closely related field, with strong quantitative skills and demonstrated experience in applied econometric analysis, large-scale data integration, and global or regional economic modeling, as well as an interest in climate risk, soil health, agricultural productivity, and policy-relevant research. Demonstrated ability and interest to engage across academic disciplines is essential.

The Postdoctoral Associate will manage and execute the core research activities of the project. Responsibilities include assembling and harmonizing large datasets from experimental trials, remote sensing, soil health databases, and farmland markets; developing and implementing quantitative models to estimate the impacts of soil health practices on soil health outcomes, productivity, risk and farmland values. The Postdoctoral Associate will lead the preparation of research manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed journals and present findings at academic and professional conferences. Additional responsibilities include collaborating with faculty mentors and external partners, engaging with agricultural finance stakeholders to translate research into policy-relevant insights, and contributing to the development of practical frameworks and tools for integrating soil health into agricultural lending and risk models.

The Cornell SC Johnson College of Business (established on July 1, 2016) combines three Schools: the Samuel Curtis Johnson Graduate School of Management (Johnson), the Charles H. Dyson School of Applied Economics and Management (Dyson), and the Nolan School of Hotel Administration (Nolan).

Dyson houses a top-ranked undergraduate business program as well as graduate programs that award Ph.D., M.S. and M.P.S. degrees. Areas of faculty research include management; environmental, energy and resource economics; food and agricultural economics; and international and development economics. Faculty members in the Dyson School frequently collaborate with colleagues in Computer and Information Sciences, Economics, Engineering, Natural Resources, and other units on campus.
