UITS RESEARCH TECHNOLOGIES (UA-RT-IUBLA)

The Research Technologies division within UITS maintains a variety of computational resources to support Indiana University's research and instructional community, including the Big Red 200 and Quartz high performance computing systems and on-premise cloud computing resources.

The Research Applications and Deep Learning team is seeking a Part-Time Software Analyst/Developer to support large language model access and usage for IU's research community. This role will work to analyze, develop, and implement solutions that enable effective and efficient use of large language models (LLMs) for researchers across various disciplines through on-premise cloud-hosted API and high performance computing system interfaces.

Department-Specific Responsibilities

  • Evaluates new large language models for integration into LLM inference platforms.
  • Develops and maintains tools, workflows, and documentation to support large language model access and usage on supported systems.
  • Collaborates with colleagues, researchers, and other key IT (e.g. network and security) infrastructure and Data Center partners.

EDUCATION

Required

  • High school diploma or equivalent

Preferred

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in computer science or related field, or currently enrolled in computer science, informatics, or other computing field major or minor

WORK EXPERIENCE

Required

  • Some experience in software development

Preferred

  • Some experience developing in large language model, natural language processing, and/or machine learning fields

Preferred

  • Python/Linux bash scripting skills
  • Proficiency with Unix-based systems
  • Large language model benchmarking and analysis experience
  • Experience integrating LLMs into open-source inference platforms (vLLM, LangChain, Llama.cpp)
  • Familiarity with vector databases and embedding models for semantic search and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG)

This position requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus.
