Position Summary


The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center invites applicants for a full-time faculty position as Open Rank Lecturer.  The assignment will be through the Office of Education.  The Director of Social Work will be charged with developing a social work program, administering the program, creating a curriculum to meet the program's needs, and teaching social work courses.  Strategic planning to meet short- and long-term goals will be essential.  The Director will ensure program success by collaborating with constituents, internal and external stakeholders, state mental health agencies, and the social work programs of other higher education institutions.
Other duties will include:

  • Oversight for the creation of an advisory board, which will provide support, expertise, and assistance in shaping the overall direction of the program.
  • Supervision of all program employees, including a project coordinator, field practicum coordinator, social work instructors, administrative staff, and student workers.
  • Creation of leadership and learning opportunities for students.
  • Utilization of online technologies to support program curriculum and initiatives.
  • Support for social work research and professional development opportunities to improve the knowledge and skills of social work practitioners statewide and faculty at UNMHSC and other institutions.
  • Working jointly with the New Mexico Children, Youth, and Families Department (CYFD) and other applicable agencies and organizations to support state social work objectives of strengthening family systems, addressing child welfare issues, identifying vulnerable populations, and similar social work foci.
  • Collaboration with the University of New Mexico Hospital to expand practicum placements.
  • Providing regular reports of program activities and outcomes to collaborators and stakeholders, within and outside of the university.
  • Acting as an advocate for the work of the program with the New Mexico Legislature, state agencies, and national organizations and agencies.
  • Active participation in national and state professional and interdisciplinary organizations and taskforces to encourage the inclusion of social work initiatives related to research and program planning.
  • Identifying local, state, and federal funding opportunities to support and develop the program’s mission and goals.
  • Exploring the possibility of expanding the program nationwide (dependent on additional funding).
  • Management of finances to meet program goals.
  • Pursue grant writing to secure financial support.
  • Present on the program’s research efforts and activities to leadership.

 

Qualifications

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in social work or counseling
  • Licensed in New Mexico
  • Must be eligible to work in the United States.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Direct experience coordinating and developing projects and activities, including research.
  • Two or more years of experience in social work education and/or social work research.
  • Administrative experience including budget review and grant writing.
  • A history of working in public/population health setting or social work setting, or social work-related organization.
  • Experience supervising and evaluating staff.
  • A demonstrated commitment to cultivate an understanding of the rich and varied cultures of New Mexico and to the success of the university's mission to serve local and global communities
