The Heilbrunn Department of Population and Family Health (HDPFH) at Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health is a dynamic, interdisciplinary Department of faculty, scientists, thought leaders, and practitioners working across public health, epidemiology, demography, social work, medicine, economics, and law. We apply multidisciplinary population science and public health research methods - alongside service-delivery - to address critical domestic and global challenges, including sexual and reproductive health rights, forced migration, child and adolescent health, maternal and newborn health, mental health, environmental justice, social and gender norms, human rights, and complex health systems. Faculty in this largely grant-funded department engage in a unique combination of research, teaching and service activities. Graduates of the Department pursue careers as research scientists, NGO leaders, public health practitioners, and evaluators who actively contribute to the scientific literature and assume important academic posts and public health leadership globally.
Housed in the Heilbrunn Department of Population and Family Health, the Program on Forced Migration and Health is one of the world's leading programs for training health and humanitarian response workers. At its founding in 1998, our program was one of the first academic programs in the world to address the deficiencies in health services provided in humanitarian response. Today, we continue to champion a professionalized and critical approach to delivering humanitarian action and are committed to educating the next generation of humanitarian leadership. Through our research and education, we seek to create an evidence-based humanitarian sector anchored in the voices and decision-making of those most impacted by conflict and displacement and founded on a framework of justice, rights, and accountability.
The Department seeks a faculty member to serve as Program Director for the Program on Forced Migration and Health (PFMH). The Program Director will provide strategic vision and leadership for the continued development and expansion of PFMH.
The successful candidate will be an accomplished scholar and educator with a strong record of research, scholarship, teaching, and service in forced migration and humanitarian health; demonstrated ability to secure external research funding (from multilateral, government, private, and philanthropic sources); experience cultivating partnerships with a diverse, global range of actors (including UN and multilateral institutions, NGOs, think tanks, and government agencies); and a deep commitment to training and mentoring the next generation of humanitarian health professionals.
In addition, the Program Director will lead the Advanced Certificate in Public Health and Humanitarian Action (PHHA), including oversight of certificate requirements, stewardship of a curriculum that reflects the evolving needs of the field, and mentorship of students pursuing the PHHA credential.
The incumbent will work closely with faculty and staff affiliated with PFMH, who influence policy, research, and practice in forced migration and humanitarian contexts globally. Our faculty addresses a diverse array of issues pertinent to the humanitarian field, including sexual and reproductive health and rights, child protection and wellbeing, mental health and psychosocial support, and strengthening systems in resource-constrained health settings.
Salary and academic rank will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The selected candidate will receive an academic appointment, as non-tenured or tenure track, commensurate with credentials and qualifications.
Minimum Degree and Experience Requirements:
- PhD, MD, or equivalent professional degree in public health, law, social sciences, medicine, or a related field is required.
- Ten or more years of experience in management and leadership roles.
- Demonstrated experience generating and/or applying evidence to transform policies and practices in ways that improve health and social outcomes, particularly for marginalized populations.
- Proven track record of securing external resources to support scholarship and academic programs from a wide range of funders.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Extensive field experience in humanitarian and/or forced migration settings.
- Proven ability to connect academic scholarship and teaching to policy development, program implementation, and practice in humanitarian and forced migration settings.
- Strong record of research and peer-reviewed publications.
- Demonstrated experience leading diverse, multidisciplinary teams.
- Proficiency in one or more additional languages, particularly Arabic, Spanish, or French.
All candidates must submit a current CV, cover letter and a list of three references with contact information.
