Job Summary
Under the general direction of the Department Human Resources Operations Supervisor and Financial Officer, the HR/Operations Supervisor supervises a team of 3+ direct reports and temporary support employees, and works with 160+ employees department (Organized Research Unit – ORU), which includes faculty, postdocs, affiliates (including volunteers and interns), graduate students, visiting scholars, non-faculty academic, and staff. The ORU includes an approximately 20+ employee experimental animal facility/vivarium located on a separate campus.
The incumbent will ensure the accountability and stewardship of departmental resources (operational, financial, and human) in compliance with departmental goals and objectives. The incumbent serves as the primary contact for the department with the campus Human Resources (HR) Shared Services. The incumbent uses an appropriate level of skills and knowledge of HR policies and programs to address personnel matters, including contract interpretation, grievances, and other high-level sensitive matters for the department. The incumbent will collaborate with the relevant campus HR department to address union-related matters. The individual handles all of the above tasks with tact, diplomacy, professionalism, and utmost confidentiality.
The incumbent will supervise and administer the department's HR Operations. Demonstrates good judgment and analytical skills in resolving day-to-day operational needs of the department. Administers and reviews workflows to ensure smooth operations related to the department’s administrative functions. The incumbent is responsible for implementing, administering, recruiting, onboarding, renewing, and separating processes in consultation and collaboration with HR Shared Services and the department’s leaders. Ensures processes are consistent with policy and implemented uniformly across the department. Makes recommendations for improvements to streamline activities, execution, and productivity. Collaborates with members of the department's leadership and administrative team. The incumbent contributes to: faculty affairs and development (advancement, lab management), department planning, resource management (e.g., office/space allocation), facilities management (e.g., NSCC conference center supervision oversight, building committee member), as well as liaises with several university shared services groups, employee relations and unions, university leadership groups (such as Dean’s Offices) and graduate student divisions. Ensure a successful collaborative partnership between academic departments and campus operations within the department.
The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.
Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.
The salary range for this position is $84,800 - $127,200 (Annual Rate).

Department Description
The Institute for Neurodegenerative Diseases (IND) at UCSF is pursuing a cutting-edge blend of basic science and clinical medicine to deliver exceptional care to individuals suffering from neurodegenerative diseases. Founded in 1999, the IND is committed to creating therapeutics that will halt diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, and dementia resulting from traumatic brain injuries. The IND is poised to make serious contributions to this struggle at the frontier of neuroscience and medicine. The mission of the Institute for Neurodegenerative Diseases is to discover causes and develop cures for these illnesses with an innovative program of basic research and clinical medicine. The IND is directed by Nobel Laureate Stanley B. Prusiner, MD.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
- Five (5) or more years of related work experience
- Working knowledge of the organization's processes, protocols, and procedures, rules and regulations, with a focus on personnel management within labor contract(s) and personnel policy
- Solid knowledge of common organization-specific and other computer application program
- Solid interpersonal skills, including verbal and written communication, active listening, critical thinking, persuasiveness, advising, and counseling, to effectively motivate others
- Solid skills to quickly evaluate complex issues and identify resolutions
- Solid organizational and customer service skills to effectively manage multiple priorities
- Demonstrated skills in employee supervision and HR administration
- Must be familiar with Animal Health Tech and Animal Tech series, and the equity and retention issues tied to these titles
- Demonstrated experience liaising with other academic departments
- Demonstrated experience with Notion and Microsoft Planner
Preferred Qualifications
- UC HR or Operations experience
- Solid knowledge of human resources and risk management planning, accounting, and payroll
