customer-focused services to residential students of the University, with close attention to detail and with a caring and concerned approach, targeted at delivering outstanding results in serving customer needs and achieving high levels of customer satisfaction and devoted to a “students first” attitude, working to ensure that University Housing facilities are well-maintained, clean, and safe for the students of Christopher Newport University.
Purpose of the Position
This position is a supervisory position working under the direction and in support of the Assistant Director of Housing Services and Housekeeping. Responsible for the direct and indirect supervision of lead housekeepers, housekeeping workers, and other housing services and housekeeping teams/team members as determined by business need and distribution of work across the Housing Services and Housekeeping supervisory team.
Day-to-day work of the person working in this role ensures University Housing Services and Housekeeping operations are implemented effectively and in compliance with all applicable training, rules, regulations, policies, procedures, and work performance quality requirements. This work also includes coordinating with, and managing, contractors or contract workers, to ensure compliance and accuracy.
The Housing Services and Housekeeping Supervisor is responsible for key aspects of operational planning and implementation, supervision of full-time classified employees, hourly employees, and student workers. Throughout their work proactive and preventive work is routine, and are responsible for related administrative functions such as interviewing, record keeping, timesheet approvals, and similar.
Work typically includes housing services and housekeeping related to housing facilities, special events when assigned, and work contributing to special initiatives and projects. Work hours are typically first shift, and may include weekend and evening hours as business demands require.
The Housing Services and Housekeeping Supervisor is someone who works with a strong commitment to a students first environment throughout their work, ensures a high degree of accuracy, and is a collaborative colleague to support the overall success of the housing program.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Related to Position
Required:
  • Skilled in the use of housekeeping equipment such as vacuum cleaner, buffers and scrubbing machine
  • Advanced knowledge of cleaning methods and cleaning supplies
  • Ability to supervise a diverse group of employees with a wide range of skills
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions
  • Ability to communicate effectively and to maintain positive relations with faculty, staff and students
  • Ability to use spreadsheets, word processing, or similar software.

Preferred:
  • Basic understanding of painting services, carpet, other flooring, and upholstery services, furniture techniques and applications, window washing and pressure washing services, refuse and recycling, uniforms and other cleaning services.
  • Ability to use an automated work order system and eVA procurement
Education, Experience, Licensure, Certification Required
Education Required:
  • High school graduate or equivalent education/experience that equates to a high school diploma
  • Valid driver’s license

Experience Required:
  • Experience with cleaning methods and cleaning supplies
  • Experience using housekeeping equipment such as vacuum cleaner, buffers and scrubbing machine
  • Experience in a lead housekeeping role, supervisory, or manager role
Additional Consideration(s)
Experience Preferred:
  • Hotel, higher education or similar housekeeping experience.
  • Experience training staff
Salary Information Starting at $36,552, Commensurate with Education and Experience.
