The Department of General Dentistry and Comprehensive Care is responsible for the education of predoctoral students in the various modalities of dental anatomy, cariology, operative and aesthetic dentistry, communication skills, community-based dentistry, and overall patient care. In addition, one of the important goals of the department is to prepare students to provide comprehensive care to patients in a modern group practice setting. As a result, students from all four years, D1 through D4, are integrated in group practices under the direction of group practice directors.

We are seeking full time five days clinical (non-tenure) track faculty based on credentials and teaching experience in general dentistry and comprehensive care. Successful candidates will be expected to teach in pre-doctoral clinics, be part of the University community and pursue scholarly activity. This position includes teaching foundational clinical skills to dental students using state-of-the-art simulation technology and hands-on instruction in preparation for patient care (20%) as well as supervision of students in the provision of clinical care (60%) and time for professional development (20%).

Key responsibilities include:  

  • Instruct predoctoral dental students in preclinical simulation laboratory courses
  • Provide direct chairside instruction and evaluation of student performance
  • Assess student competency through practical examinations and skill evaluations
  • Mentor students in developing proper ergonomics, infection control, and clinical techniques
  • Participate in curriculum development and educational innovation initiatives
  • Collaborate with faculty colleagues in interdisciplinary education
  • Contribute to faculty meetings, committees, and institutional service
  • Other related duties as required

In compliance with NYC's Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position for the rank of Clinical Instructor is $80K - $120K & for the rank of Clinical Assistant Professor is $90K - $140K. New York University considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.

Required Qualifications

  • Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) or Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) degree or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 2 years of clinical practice experience in general dentistry
  • Strong verbal and written communication abilities
  • Proficiency in dental terminology and clinical documentation
  • Understanding of infection control protocols and safety procedures
  • Knowledge of dental materials and their applications

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior teaching experience in dental education (formal or informal)

  • Proficiency with educational technology platforms
  • Interest in curriculum innovation and educational research

Licensure

  • New York State State dental licensure is required for this position
  • Candidate must be eligible for institutional employment authorization
  • Background check and credential verification required

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand for extended periods during laboratory instruction
  • Fine motor skills necessary for supervising clinical procedures
  • Visual acuity sufficient for detailed clinical work and instruction
  • Ability to move throughout simulation laboratory spaces and dental clinics

Schedule Flexibility

  • Willingness to work during scheduled laboratory sessions
  • Availability for student consultation and office hours
  • Participation in faculty meetings and institutional events
  • Potential evening or weekend commitments for special programs
