Chief, Division of Critical Care Medicine, Department of Anesthesiology(College of Medicine-Phoenix)

The University of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix (COM-P) is seeking a Chief for the Division of Critical Care Medicine in the Department of Anesthesiology. The Department of Anesthesiology was formally established on July 14, 2025, with the goal of rapidly developing a residency program and expanding perioperative programs at Banner – University Medical Center Phoenix (B-UMCP). Additional expansion and collaboration with existing Banner Health facilities in Phoenix is also anticipated.

The Chief, Division of Critical Care Medicine (CCM) will oversee all critical care operations staffed by Department of Anesthesiology anesthesiologist-intensivists at B-UMCP.

The Division Chief reports to the Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology for all duties and responsibilities of that position. The Division Chief works closely with the critical care leaders and intensive care unit directors at B-UMCP.

The successful candidate will fulfill the responsibilities of a faculty member by actively participate in teaching, clinical service and/or scholarly work, and must qualify for an appointment at the rank of associate or full professor.

• Provide leadership of faculty, residents, and fellows within the Department.
• Produce a fair and equitable clinical schedule for anesthesiologist-intensivist faculty working in B-UMCP critical care units.
• Submit an annual plan showing implementation of best practices, new programs or clinical incentives, processes to respond to complaints from surgeons/proceduralists, and processes to respond to patient complaints.
• Develop clinical guidelines, care paths, and protocols, in coordination with B-UMCP perioperative leaders and ICU medical directors to enhance the quality, safety, and value of care provided by Departmental anesthesiologist-intensivists to patients at B-UMCP.
• Perform at least two performance improvement initiatives per year.
• Work with the B-UMCP office of risk management and CMO staff to develop appropriate risk-reduction efforts and initiatives to optimize care and processes for maximum cost-effectiveness.
• Create a process to assess initial and ongoing competency for anesthesiologist-intensivists in the Department (e.g., focused professional practice evaluations and other Joint Commission requirements).
• Lead efforts to ensure that all anesthesia providers in the Department are familiar with fundamental critical care concepts both in the operating room and procedural areas as well as throughout the entire spectrum of perioperative care.
• Engender a professional, equitable and collegial clinical work environment for faculty, residents, and learners at all levels.
• Work closely with B-UMCP perioperative leaders to define and track the most relevant critical care data that will be used to measure and improve clinical quality and safety.
• Assist B-UMCP leaders and Departmental leaders with the creation of tools and technologies that may be utilized to assure that any resultant quality efforts result in sustainable change.
• Work with the residency Program Director to oversee the planning and successful completion of Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) requirements regarding critical care medicine milestones required for resident graduation.
• Assist the Chair and clinical/preclinical research staff to facilitate clinical/preclinical (e.g., translational) trials and research.
• Provide visibility for the Department as a subject matter expert in perioperative medicine and critical care medicine across B-UMCP and the Banner Health System.
• Assume an active role on hospital and college committees as required.

• Hold an MD, DO or equivalent degree from an accredited institution.
• Be board certified in both Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine (or Neurocritical Care).
• Be eligible for unrestricted medical licensure in the State of Arizona.
• Be eligible for medical staff membership at B-UMCP.
• Be eligible for a University of Arizona academic appointment at the Associate Professor level or higher.
• Have experience and recognition in the development and successful implementation of new safety, quality and educational programs.

• Have experience with hospital partnership and collaboration.
• Have experience serving on safety and quality committees.
• Exhibit skills in diplomacy, and the ability to influence decisions.
• Demonstrate expertise with information technology clinically as well as metrics/analytics.
• Have experience with advanced critical care modalities to include extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO, including ELSO Certification).
• Have proficiency using point-of-care ultrasound (PoCUS), to also include basic transesophageal echocardiography (TEE).
• Demonstrate the ability to obtain and apply knowledge to complex matters and exercise decision-making and problem-solving techniques.
• Demonstrate the ability to partner to achieve outcomes and results, manage projects, develop programs and execute plans.
• Exhibit a high level of proficiency in developing and maintaining productive interpersonal relationships among multidisciplinary critical care team members.
• Show ability to effectively deal and interact with a diverse population and to effectively handle interpersonal conflict.
• Have a working knowledge of quality improvement processes.
• Demonstrate skills in principle-based negotiation, persuasion and organization.
• Be able to speak publicly.
• Demonstrate working knowledge regarding the use of descriptive statistics to analyze and draw conclusions.
