About the Department
Job Summary
We are seeking a skilled and compassionate Advanced Practice Provider (APP) / Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) to join our dynamic team within the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. The ideal candidate will play a vital role in providing comprehensive care to patients under the supervision or alternate supervision of attending physicians. In this role, the APP/APN will provide high-quality medical services across multiple areas, including well-woman care, problem visits, post-operative care, and diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. Candidates will be heavily involved in our Labor & Delivery unit and will participate in rounding and patient management.
Responsibilities
Provide direct primary health care to patients, in collaboration with consulting physician and the multidisciplinary health team in accordance with privileges approved by the credentials committee, to include identification, management, and/or referral of health problems.
Conduct comprehensive or episodic health assessments and develop patient care plans within clinical nursing practice and medical care protocols.
Take patient histories, conduct physical examinations, and record the date in the patient's record; screen patients to determine the need for hospital admission, making referrals to other disciplines as indicated, write progress notes; prepare patient workups and summaries noting pertinent positive and negative findings; obtain psychosocial history relevant to patient care, and assume responsibility for developing therapeutic relationships with patients.
Order and schedule laboratory studies and diagnostic procedures; explain necessity, preparation, nature and anticipated effects of scheduled diagnostic and therapeutic procedures to the patient.
Evaluate outcomes of care delivered to patients and initiates changes in the nursing approach accordingly.
Participate in development of collaborative practice arrangements.
Assume accountability for patient care in making decisions, prescribing appropriate medications as set forth in the delegation of prescriptive authority, prescribing appropriate treatments, delegating tasks, and maintaining a comfortable environment for the patient.
Collaborate with and act as liaison among the nurse, patient, family, physician, and community resources for coordination of patient care.
Select appropriate communications approaches to achieve desired outcomes of patient care.
Actively pursue required knowledge and skills for professional development.
Identify and participate in quality assurance issues on the unit.
May participate in health education in the community.
May participate in basic science and clinical research projects conducted by supervising physician.
May prepare statistical reports and analyses setting forth progress, adverse trends and appropriate recommendations or conclusions.
Act as a resource for clinical skills to staff on or off the unit.
May participate in teaching students and residents in techniques and procedures which are unique to specific clinical setting.
Practice specific and invasive procedure privileges are detailed in each APNs/APPs Delineation of Privileges.
Designs patient education programs that include information required to make informed health care and treatment decisions.
Evaluates goals and outcomes taking into account the benefit-versus-burden, safety, quality, and cost-effectiveness for the patient, family and the organization.
Develops diagnostic strategies and therapeutic interventions needed to achieve the goals and outcomes of the patient’s plan of care.
Has a deep understanding and response to adverse drug reactions, with special attention to vulnerable populations such as infants, children, pregnant and lactating women, or older adults. Develops and coordinates APP training and professional development activities.
Performs other related work as needed.

Preferred Qualifications
Education:
Advanced nursing degree from an accredited school/college of nursing.
Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant educational program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant, Inc.
Experience:
Two or more years of clinical experience in a related area of specialty.
Licenses and Certifications for Advanced Practice Nurse:
Current Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) license in the State of Illinois or eligibility to receive by start date.
Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of Illinois or eligibility to receive by start date.
Licenses and Certifications for Physician Assistant:
Current Physician Assistant license/registration in the State of Illinois or eligibility to receive by start date.
Certification from the National Commission for the Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) by start date.

Professional Requirements and Compliance
Willingness to enter into a written collaborative agreement with a collaborating physician upon hire.
Once licensed and as needed, willingness to apply for a controlled substance license and DEA number.
Willingness to be privileged and credentialed through the University of Chicago Medical Staff Office prior to start date.
Working Conditions
Clinical setting.
Requires standing, walking, and occasional lifting during patient assessments, procedures, and operating room assistance.
May require participation in on-call or after-hours coverage depending on clinical service needs.
Regular use of computers, electronic health records, and other medical equipment for documentation and patient care.
Occasional travel between clinical sites (e.g., Hyde Park and Orland Park locations).
