Clinical Skills Educator (joint post with Doncaster and Bassetlaw NHS Foundation Trust)

Overview

We are inviting applications for the full time fixed term post of Clinical Skills Educator. This is a joint post in partnership with Doncaster and Bassetlaw NHS Foundation Trust (DBTH). The post holder will be based at the Clinical Skills Centre (CSC) (50% fte) and DBTH (50% fte) - you will be expected to work alongside staff from the CSC as well as those involved in the coordination and teaching of our healthcare programmes (including nursing).

We are looking for a person with an interest in developing the use of state of the art simulation based technology to enhance the delivery of clinical skills teaching, patient encounters and assessments. A key part of the role is to work alongside the Clinical Skills Lead in the development and delivery of high quality simulation and clinical skills in pre-registration programmes. A knowledge of the use of simulation permitted within pre-registration nursing programmes would be an advantage.

Main duties and responsibilities (CSC role)

• Work alongside the Clinical Skills Lead in the planning and delivery of appropriate clinical skills workshops and teaching sessions to pre and post registration nursing and nursing associate students, ensuring that the outcomes of the programme curricula and the requirements of the professional bodies are met. This includes producing appropriate evidence-based lesson plans and delivering teaching sessions as required as well as contributing to adhoc work schemes.
• Work alongside the Clinical Skills Lead in developing a variety of simulation methods that will meet NMC requirements in relation to the use of simulation to meet a set number of practice hours within pre-registration programmes.
• Work alongside the Clinical Skills Lead in the planning and implementation of high fidelity simulation manikins and technology teaching, including the use of Sim Woman.
• Play an active role in the preparation of the teaching environment and also the maintenance of equipment and ordering of consumables.
•  Work alongside the Clinical Skills Lead for the planning, development and delivery of appropriate clinical skills workshops and other activities within the clinical skills centre as they are required for the specific programmes.
• Regularly review, develop and implement new teaching methods as appropriate.  This includes updating existing lesson plans to incorporate the latest evidence based clinical practice and teaching strategies.  An example being the involvement of Patients as Educators to supplement and/or complement the curricular delivery.  Ensuring, at all times, the methods feed into the pre and post registration nursing programmes and complement the strategic plan of AHPNM.
• Assessment and examination of undergraduate and postgraduate nursing students including OSCEs.
• Assist in the organisation of various clinical assessments and examinations for the undergraduate and postgraduate nursing students, which includes assisting with the preparation and facilitation of assessments.
•  Assist with the recruitment and training of simulated and real patients to be part of the Patients as Educators programme.
• Contribute to the strategic planning and delivery of further developments in clinical skills teaching, learning and assessment.
• Prioritise own daily work, dealing with reactive requests relating to teaching, facilitation and assessment.
• Network with colleagues in the local area to keep up to date with the latest developments in clinical practice, including Hospital Trusts and GP practices. Engage with Clinical Skills Educators in the region to ensure effective and reliable teaching and assessment.
• Reflect on own development and engagement and maintain responsibility towards continuous professional development.
• Work with administrators to ensure effective scheduling of activities.

Main duties and responsibilities (DBTH role)

As a Clinical Educator, you will collaboratively plan, organise, and coordinate training across divisions and sites, ensuring both individual and service needs are met in line with organisational objectives. You will work in partnership with the Division Education Lead and other appointed colleagues to deliver high-quality training and development across all DBTH sites. The role involves providing expert advice and support on education and training matters within designated directorates, fostering a culture of shared learning and best practice. You will also actively participate in cross-boundary initiatives, both within and outside the organisation, to enhance patient care and staff development.

Duties

• Engage in regular networking events and joint meetings to disseminate information, share lessons learned, and align educational strategies across divisions.

• Represent education at relevant committees and forums, ensuring joint perspectives are considered.

• Uphold professional standards and departmental policies, including clinical governance and health & safety, in all collaborative activities.

• Maintain confidentiality and comply with data protection requirements.

• Conduct joint Learning Needs Analysis (LNA) with divisional leaders to identify and address staff education requirements.

• Support the delivery and monitoring of core and role-specific training, striving for continuous improvement in patient care and staff competence.

• Facilitate staff development as supervisors, assessors, and mentors, supporting transitions and progression for all staff groups.
