Assistant Professor Genetic Epidemiology role is an appointment under MRC/UVRI & LSHTM Uganda Research Unit in the Non-Communicable Disease Theme. This is unique leadership opportunity to shape the global virology agenda by bridging cutting-edge field research in Africa.
The post-holder will be responsible for establishing, validating and overseeing the conduct of genomic epidemiology studies including genome-wide association studies of Cardiometabolic traits, Kidney function, metabolic syndrome and other Non-Communicable diseases, fine-mapping, machine learning, genetic risk score analysis and Mendelian Randomisation studies.
The candidate must hold a doctoral degree in a relevant field with experience in genetic epidemiology and bioinformatics, including at least four internationally excellent peer-reviewed outputs in the past five years. They should demonstrate ability to work independently and collaboratively, strong organisational, interpersonal, and communication skills, and effective time management. Experience in team building and external partnerships is essential. A solid grasp of the genetic epidemiology and bioinformatics landscape - especially in capacity strengthening, research, networks, and policy in sub-Saharan Africa is required. Proficiency in statistical methods, programming (including Linux), and use of high-performance computing clusters and parallel computation is expected, along with a clear research vision to enhance the Unit’s profile and impact.
The post is part-time 3.5 hours hours per week, 0.1 FTE and fixed-term until 12 months. The post is funded by the NIH (DSI-Africa) grant and is available immediately.
The salary will be on the LSHTM salary scale, Grade 7 in the range £53,317-£61,034 per annum pro rata (inclusive of London Weighting). The post will be subject to the LSHTM terms and conditions of service. Annual leave entitlement is 30 working days per year, pro rata for part-time staff. In addition to this there are discretionary “Wellbeing Days”. Membership of the Pension-Scheme is available. The post is Uganda-based.
