Offer Description

The University of Gothenburg tackles society’s challenges with diverse knowledge. 58 000 students and 6800 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract researchers and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.

Research at the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences (BioEnv) extends from mountain ecosystems through forests, grassland/meadow, and freshwater systems to the coast and sea. In these environments, we work at different levels of biological organization from genes through individuals and populations to communities and ecosystems. Our research spans ecology, evolution, physiology, and systematics and addresses questions in the context of both natural and man-made environments.

The department's activities are conducted mainly at two locations, GU's premises in Natrium on Medicinaregatan 7B in Gothenburg and at Kristineberg Marine Research Station in Fiskebäckskil. The current position is located at the premises in Gothenburg, which is where Herbarium GB is situated. The latter hosts more than one million specimens collected from all around the world and forms an integral part of an international network of almost 4,000 herbaria worldwide.

Subject area

Systematics of non-vascular plants and other cryptogams

Subject area description

The subject area is the scientific study of evolutionary relationships, diversity, and classification of non-vascular plants, fungi, and algae. This integrates fieldwork, herbarium curation, and modern analytical approaches to understand relationships in time and space. The area therefore provides a foundation for taxonomy, conservation, ecology, population genetics, and related subjects. The position contributes to the department’s strength in biodiversity science as well as in herbarium curation, while also engaging undergraduate and graduate students through teaching, research, and mentorship.

Duties

The senior lectureship comprises 60% research and teaching systematics, evolution, and conservation biology regarding cryptogams and 40% curation of the non-vascular plant, fungal, and algal collections at Herbarium GB.

Teaching and research tasks include:

  • Teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels in non-vascular plants, algae, and/or fungal taxonomy, systematics, and related subjects. This includes lecturing, coordination of practical exercises, course leadership, and degree project supervision at undergraduate and graduate levels.
  • Participation in the development and renewal of teaching in both content and form as part of a larger teaching team.
  • Development of and engagement with a sustained research program in which herbarium specimens form an integral part and with a focus on non-vascular plants, fungi, or algae.
  • Development of collaborations with other research groups within and outside the department.
  • Building and leading a research group including applying for external research funding and publishing in high-quality scientific journals.
  • Supervising doctoral students.
  • Participation in and development of societal collaboration projects.

Curational tasks include:

  • Curation and expansion of the collections of non-vascular plants, fungi, and algae in Herbarium GB.
  • Contributing to integration of Herbarium GB into teaching, research, and the broader community.
  • Support for digitization and database cataloguing in line with international standards for specimen data.
  • Support for visiting researchers and promoting collaboration with national and international institutions.
  • Contributions to grant applications and the development of strategic goals for Herbarium GB.
  • Professional services to the scientific and academic communities.

If you do not have a formal training in teaching and learning in higher education, you must complete such training within two years of taking up the position. University of Gothenburg offers courses in teaching and learning in higher education.

You should be able to teach in Swedish within two years. The university offers courses in Swedish.
