Offer Description

We are seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Researcher to join our team in the interdisciplinary research project:

Knowledge making in the era of Artificial Intelligence: the social regulation of writing for publication processes and products

Become part of our innovative project and contribute to exciting research on writing for publication and generative artificial intelligence within a collaborative and dynamic environment. The project is funded through a grant awarded by the Swedish Research Council with focus on the social consequences of digitalisation (Dnr. 2025-03827). It aims to investigate how AI tools are reshaping writing for publication, the social regulation of writing processes, and the linguistic and rhetorical characteristics of published research texts. Read more here .

About us

You will be part of the Division for Language and Communication at the Department of Communication and Learning in Science, and a member of our graduate school Communication and Learning in STEM. The division’s research is situated at the intersection of higher education pedagogy, communication pedagogy, applied linguistics, and diversity and internationalisation studies.

The advertised position will be located at the intersection of our two research themes:

  • Digital Learning and Teaching, and
  • Writing in doctoral education, scientific writing, and science communication.

Working across these themes, you will join a team of researchers investigating how digital advancements are transforming scientific communication, writing practices, and learning in STEM.

The division offers ample opportunities for collaboration and networking, both within Chalmers and through our strong national and international research networks. As a postdoctoral researcher, you will be encouraged to take an active role in this vibrant research environment, shaping your work in dialogue with ongoing research and interdisciplinary collaborations.

About the research project

Artificial Intelligence is increasingly embedded in writing for publication. While Generative AI tools may support efficiency and access, they also raise critical questions about authorship, agency, collaboration, and the diversity of scientific discourse.

This project examines:

  • How AI affects self-regulation, co-regulation, and socially shared regulation during writing for publication.
  • How AI-assisted writing may shape rhetorical conventions, linguistic diversity, and homogenization in published research.

The project combines micro-ethnographic, multimodal analyses of writing processes (e.g. keystroke logging, screen capture, stimulated-recall interviews) with corpus-based and genre-oriented analyses of published academic texts.

Who we are looking for The following requirements are mandatory:

  • A doctoral degree or an equivalent foreign degree. This eligibility requirement must be met no later than the time the employment decision is made
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English

Qualifications required

We are looking for a highly motivated candidate who meets the following qualifications:

  • Educational background: A PhD degree in a field relevant to the project, such as applied linguistics, educational psychology, computational linguistics, psychology/cognitive science with a focus on writing, or educational sciences.
  • Research experience: Strong knowledge of qualitative and quantitative research methods and a demonstrated interest in multimodal and/or longitudinal research designs.
  • Language proficiency: Fluency in English (spoken and written) is required. Additional proficiency in Swedish and/or any other language is considered an asset.
  • Personal qualities: Ability to work both independently and collaboratively. Strong organisational skills and attention to detail are essential, as the project involves designing and managing demanding data collections.

What you will do

As a Postdoctoral researcher, your primary responsibility will be to carry out data collection and analysis in close collaboration with the researchers on the project. You key responsibilities include:

  • Co-lead longitudinal data collection with early career researchers across disciplines (recruitment, scheduling, participant communication, and fieldwork coordination).
  • Collect and manage multimodal process data on writing-for-publication, including keystroke logging, screen capture, interviews/stimulated recall, and text drafts.
  • Conduct micro-ethnographic and qualitative analyses of writing regulation processes (SRL, CoRL, SSRL), identifying triggers, interaction patterns, and trajectories over time.
  • Support and co-lead Strand 2 corpus work, including compiling and documenting the corpus (selection criteria, inclusion/exclusion, metadata) and contributing to rhetorical/linguistic analyses (genre analysis and/or computational/AI-assisted text analysis).
  • Collaborate in interpretation and theorization with the project team, integrating micro-level process findings with macro-level disciplinary and sociocultural contexts.
  • Produce research outputs: co-author peer-reviewed journal articles, conference presentations, and contribute to project reports and dissemination materials.

Contract terms

The position is a temporary full-time employment for two years with the possibility of a one-year extension.

The position requires physical presence throughout the entire employment. A valid residence permit must be presented by the start date, otherwise the offer may be withdrawn.
