Ph.D. student position in computer science

Updated: about 9 hours ago

Blekinge Institute of Technology is a place of curiosity and ingenuity with a campus in the middle of the Blekinge archipelago. Here we offer education from undergraduate to doctoral level and conduct world-class applied research. We change and make a difference. Do you want to become one of us?

The Department of Computer Science (DIDA) is one of three departments at the Faculty of Computing. The department is BTH’s largest department at BTH with 70 people. At the department, research is conducted in two major areas: computer science and engineering and visual and interactive computer science. There are a number of different research projects in both areas.

Work description

The Ph.D position is part of the research project "ScEENeC - Scalable, Energy-Efficient Neuromorphic Computing ", carried out together with researchers at Linköping University and Lund University, and is funded by ELLIIT - Excellence Center at Linköping - Lund in Information Technology.

High energy consumption and computational demands are significant challenges of today’s AI systems. One promising alternative is spiking neural networks (SNNs) executed on neuromorphic hardware. Neuromorphic computing tries to mimic how the brain works by relying on changes in signals, i.e., ”spikes”, rather than continuously recalculating numerical values as in traditional neural networks. However, challenges that arise that we will address in this project are, e.g., efficient training of SNN models, programming abstractions for SNNs, development and mapping of applications to SNNs, and balancing system energy, latency, and cost.

The Ph.D. student hired at BTH will mainly focus on two aspects of neuromorphic computing:

  • Guidelines / frameworks for mapping applications to neuromorphic systems.
  • Efficient training methods of neuromorphic applications on neuromorphic systems.

We are looking for a highly motivated person with deep technical skills that is interested in working on the topics above. The doctoral student is expected to collaborate with our partners at Linköping University and Lund University within the employment framework.

The main duties of Ph.D. students are to devote themselves to their research studies which include participating in research projects and third-cycle courses (no less than 80%). The work duties may also include teaching and other departmental duties (no more than 20%). The project involves regular business trips to meetings with our project partners and to international conferences.

Eligibility requirements

To be employed as a Ph.D. student, it is required that the applicant is or will be admitted to postgraduate education. Eligible for admission to postgraduate education is a person who has completed a degree at an advanced level in a technical, mathematical, or scientific field or who has otherwise acquired knowledge to be able to benefit from postgraduate education in the subject.

(Chapter 7, Section 39 in the Higher Education Ordinance (1993:100)).

Meriting competencies and experience

In addition to the requirements described in the work description, eligibility requirements, and assessment criteria for the position, the following degrees, competencies, and experiences are considered meritorious:

  • Hold a Master of engineering or Master's degree in computer science, computer engineering, or equivalent.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in English (reading, writing, speaking).
  • Show the ability to work independently and in a team, as well as initiate and drive research studies.
  • Good knowledge in computer architecture, low-level programming, and the hardware/software-interface.
  • Good knowledge in one or more of the following areas: AI and machine learning, multicore and GPU programming, and highly parallel systems.
  • Good knowledge in one or more of the following programming languages/environments: C/C++, Python, PyTorch (or similar), and Cuda.

Place of employment: Karlskrona.

Employment level: 100%.

Commencement: To be agreed.

Duration: The duration is up to 4 years of full-time research. Initially, the employment covers one year, after which it is renewed for a maximum of two years at a time, provided that the individual study plan is followed. The position may comprise up to 20% of other duties (e.g., teaching), in which case the duration can be extended to a maximum of 5 years.

Application deadline: 2026-02-28.

Your application should contain the following:
