Offer Description

Are you interested in pursuing doctoral studies in an international and collaborative research environment? We are now inviting applications for a doctoral position focused on contributing to future solutions for decarbonization in industry and power generation. The position offers the opportunity to work closely with researchers and industry partners across Europe within a structured doctoral training framework.

This position is one of 17 doctoral positions in the European Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Training Network Coupled Problems for Decarbonization in Industry and Power Generation (COMBINE). The network joins 17 international academic institutions and 14 industry partners (https://euraxess.ec.europa.eu/jobs/401249 ). We work together in the field of fluid-structure interaction in technical systems and industrial processes, addressing questions of advanced numerical modelling and simulation, measurement techniques, robust sensors, data analysis for experiments and real-world monitoring, development of artificial intelligence methods in the simulation and data analysis and implementation and application of advanced knowledge in energy, process, and materials engineering applications. Our doctoral researchers will be trained in leading European research environments with generous support and training by many industry partners. Within COMBINE we seek excellent open-minded and team-spirited PhD candidates who will get unique international, interdisciplinary and inter-sectoral training in scientific and transferable skills by distinguished leaders from academia and industry.

About us

This position is set at the division of Marin Technolog y at Chalmers University of Technology, and meanwhile maintained with direct co-research/-education with the division of Fluid Dynamics in the same university. The Marine Technology division carries out fundamental and applied research to enable the development and improvement of marine technology, such as ships, subsea systems and renewable energy solutions. We support industry and societies world-wide with knowledge, understanding and solutions that minimize emissions from shipping, improve the life time and reduces maintenance need for equipment in the harsh ocean environment, and ensures safe operations. Our activities are related primarily to development and application of numerical modelling, e.g. CFD, FEA, FSI, optimization, ML, but we are also involved in both experiments and real life monitoring to support our findings. Besides research, our division is also involved in education at Master's and doctoral level. We are involved in the master program Mobility Engineering (Naval Architecture – Marine Technology profile) and we are part of the Nordic Master in Maritime Engineering. The research group consists of senior researchers, post-doc and PhD student. During the course of the project, supervision of master and bachelor thesis projects will be involved. Close communications with the Swedish marine industry will be conduced in a regular base.

Who we are looking for

To qualify as a Doctoral student, you must have a Master's degree (masterexamen) of 120 credits or a Master’s degree (magisterexamen) of 60 credits Mechanical Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science, or in relevant fields of fluid/structure dynamics and acoustics. For students with an education earned outside of Sweden, a 4-year Bachelor’s degree is accepted.

  • A qualified candidate is expected to be able to independently develop scientific concepts and methods, be competent in coding with Python and Matlab at least, and be fluent in both speaking and writing in English.
  • The EU Mobility Rule applies. That is, the candidate must not have resided or carried out her/his main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the host country for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately before the recruitment date. Compulsory national service, short stays such as holidays, and time spent as part of a procedure for obtaining refugee status under the Geneva Convention are not taken into account.
  • By 1 September 2026, the candidate must have less than four years of research experience and must not have been awarded a doctoral degree.
  • The candidate can be of any nationality.

What you will do

As a full-time position, the doctoral student should be able to independently develop numerical methods and codes, and collaborate with senior researchers/engineers and other students to solve problems. The position needs frequent communication, including meetings and workshops, with the industry and research organizations. Coding scripts and computing with CFD, FEM and acoustics computer programs will be required to complete daily tasks. The student should gradually develop competence in writing technical reports, and publishing high-quality scientific papers in journals or conferences.
Other duties:
The doctoral student has to conduct secondments at academic and industrial network partners.
