Position description

An appointment as associate senior lecturer is a fixed-term career-development position of at least four years and at the most six years in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 4, Section 12 a.

The purpose of the appointment is for the teacher to have the opportunity to develop research autonomy and acquire the scholarly and teaching qualifications required for the eligibility requirement for appointment as a senior lecturer.

The position includes research and teaching, where the candidate is expected to independently plan and carry out scientific studies within the Production Development research group. The main research and teaching area is Industrial Systems with a focus on circular factories. This involves developing new methods for production design that support both the establishment of new factories and the industry’s green transition, with the goal of providing insights and knowledge on how factories need to evolve to become more circular.

In the role of Associate Senior Lecturer, responsibilities include scientific writing of articles, dissemination and oral presentation of research results. An important part of dissemination is to actively work with industrial applications in close collaboration with industry partners, where impact is a driving force.

As Associate Senior Lecturer, you are expected to take significant personal responsibility for planning and conducting studies, take initiative to develop ideas and knowledge, and collaborate with others both within and outside academia. Teaching or other assignments may be included in the position up to a maximum of 40%.

You will be part of the Production Development research group and are expected to contribute to the development of both the group and activities within research and education. In addition, the recruited Associate Senior Lecturer is expected to participate in a joint leadership program designed and funded by Mistra as part of the employment.

Eligibility requirements

We are looking for a person who has obtained a doctoral degree or equivalent competence no more than seven years prior to the application deadline.

In order to be employed as a teacher at MDU, training in higher education teaching and learning, or equivalent acquired knowledge, is required. A person appointed but lacking training in higher education teaching and learning will be offered in-house training within two and a half years. The requirements regarding training in higher education teaching and learning at Mälardalen University correspond to ten weeks of study.

For this position, the following eligibility requirements apply in addition to those specified in the Appointment Regulations for Mälardalen University:

  • Doctoral degree in production engineering, mechanical engineering, industrial economics, circular economy, or equivalent.
  • Knowledge and understanding of industrial operations circularity, environmental management, as well as their needs and challenges.
  • Ability to collaborate with individuals at different levels both within and outside academia, such as students, colleagues, and representatives from industry.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English, at a level required to perform tasks in research and teaching. Particularly important is the ability to write scientifically.

Assessment criteria

The assessment criteria will be based partly on the degree of skill required for the position and partly on the ability and suitability otherwise required to carry out the work duties.

Regarding the nature of the appointment as a career-development position, the applicant's scholarly and educational merits will be assessed primarily in qualitative terms. A quantitative advantage of an applicant, which can be explained by an applicant who has been working operatively for a long time, will therefore not be a deciding factor.

In addition to the established basic assessment criteria, according to the Appointment Regulations for Mälardalens University, some additional criteria apply to this position:

  • Knowledge and experience in industrial production and circular economy are considered an advantage.
  • Experience working with industrial applications and/or demonstrations and applications in a laboratory environment is considered an advantage.
  • Ability to identify industrial needs and translate them into research questions and projects, as well as the capacity to transform research results into demonstrators, industrial applications, and use in undergraduate education.
  • Proficiency in the Swedish language is highly meritorious.
  • Documented experience of collaboration with individuals in different roles and environments, particularly with business partners in industrial contexts, is highly meritorious.
  • Documented experience and ability to teach at different levels is highly prioritized, as we see the connection between research and education as increasingly important to support the industry’s transition.

In an overall assessment of suitability, emphasis is also placed on personal abilities. All employees at MDU are expected to cooperate and treat colleagues and students with respect, take responsibility for the organisation and their own work duties and contribute to a positive work environment.

  • Ability to independently lead, plan, and carry out studies both individually and in collaboration, within and outside academia.
  • Ability and documented experience in communicating and collaborating with others, both within academia and industry.

We value the qualities that an even distribution of age and gender, as well as ethnic and cultural diversity, can contribute to the organisation.
