Offer Description

The Biomaterials, Biomechanics and Tissue Engineering Group (BBT) at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) is seeking a Postdoctoral candidate to work on the development and optimization of surface coatings for bioresorbable coils.

The project aims to develop a bioresorbable metallic and/or polymeric coils for the embolization of the ovarian vein in women affected by Pelvic Congestion Syndrome (PCS). PCS affects approximately 15% of women aged 18 - 50. The current clinical solution consists of embolizing the ovarian vein by placing an average of six permanent metallic coils. While effective, this approach could be significantly improved through the development of biodegradable coils with tailored surface modifications, enabling enhanced embolization, a reduced number of implanted devices, and improved patient outcomes.

Main tasks and responsibilities

The selected candidate will be responsible of:

  • Design and fabrication of a new biodegradable metallic and/ or polymeric coils using additive manufacturing techniques.
  • Development of surface modifications, including topographical features and/or coatings incorporating sclerosing agents, to enhance embolization performance.
  • Physicochemical characterization of materials and coatings.
  • Release studies and biological evaluations.
  • Peparation of periodic reports to track the project progress.
  • Preparation of scientific manuscripts and presentations for workshops or conferences to disseminate research results to the scientific community.

The integration of biodegradable materials with optimized surface modifications will enable the development of innovative embolization devices that surpass current clinical solutions for PCS.
