Offer Description

IDIBGI is looking for highly motivated and ambitious CANCER POSTDOC RESEARCHERS of any nationality interested in developing collaborative applications for the POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP CALLS of the “Sara Borrell” ISCIII and Beatriu de Pinós AGAUR Programs.
We aim to recruit excellent Postdoc Researchers to advance Precision Cancer Prevention by integrating experimental and in silico studies. The position(s) are available under the supervision of Dr. Miquel Angel Pujana (Google Scholar), Principal Investigator (PI) in the OncoGir group of the Institut d’Investigació Biomèdica de Girona Dr. Josep Trueta (IdIBGi).

Brief description of the Research Project
Substantial progress has been made in recent years in identifying and characterizing the molecular, cellular, and microenvironmental alterations that define cancer, driving major advances in precision oncology. However, the earliest biological changes that initiate cancer development remain poorly understood, limiting progress toward truly personalized and precision prevention strategies.
Our group (PI) combines experimental and in silico approaches to elucidate the biological basis of breast cancer initiation and increased cancer risk, with the ultimate goal of identifying and developing targeted preventive and interception strategies for women at high risk. Recent work from our group has demonstrated, for the first time to our knowledge, the biological relevance and preneoplastic impact of a cancer risk modifier, opening new avenues for precision prevention (Nat Commun 2022; PMID: 35393420). In parallel, our research focuses on the role of immune cell traits and immunosurveillance in cancer susceptibility (iScience 2020; PMID: 32622267), as well as the mechanisms by which emerging cancer cells evade immune control (Nature 2021; PMID: 34732895).
The postdoctoral candidate(s) will be key members of the research group, contributing to studies on the mechanisms of breast cancer initiation and on how immune system alterations cooperate with epithelial transformation and tumor development. The candidate(s) will receive advanced training in in vivo experimental models and computational analyses and will work within a multidisciplinary team of basic scientists and clinicians.
Candidates with a PhD in biological sciences or related fields are encouraged to submit a CV and a letter of interest outlining their research experience and technical skills. The selected candidate will submit a joint application with the Principal Investigator and the host institution. Successful applicants will conduct their research at the IDIBGI, Girona, Spain.

o Expertise in experimental in vivo and/or advanced in vitro systems, such as mouse models, organoids, primary cell cultures, or functional perturbation assays.
o Experience in immunology or tumor–immune interactions, including immune profiling, immunosurveillance, immune evasion mechanisms, or analysis of immune cell traits.
o Computational and data-analysis skills, including analysis of multi-omics datasets (e.g. bulk or single-cell RNA-seq, genomics, epigenomics), statistical modeling, or integrative in silico approaches; experience with R, Python, or similar tools is an asset.
o Ability to work in multidisciplinary and translational environments, interacting with clinicians, bioinformaticians, and population scientists, and contributing to collaborative research and grant applications.
o Strong scientific communication skills, demonstrated by manuscript writing, conference presentations, and the ability to clearly articulate complex biological concepts.

Specific Requirements

Applicants must meet the eligibility requirements of either the Sara Borrell ISCIII 2025 call (https://www.isciii.es/en/recursos-de-solicitudes/documentos-normalizados ) or the Beatriu de Pinós AGAUR 2025 call (https://agaur.gencat.cat/en/beques-i-ajuts/convocatories-per-temes/Ajut… ), including the following:
 Doctoral degree: Applicants must hold a PhD in biomedical sciences, life sciences, medicine, bioinformatics, or related fields

– For Beatriu de Pinós, the PhD must have been obtained within the eligibility window defined in the 2025 call (typically the last 7 years, excluding officially recognized career interruptions).
– For Sara Borrell, candidates must be recent PhD graduates in health sciences, in accordance with ISCIII requirements for postdoctoral training contracts
 Postdoctoral stage and mobility: Candidates must comply with the mobility and career stage conditions specified in the corresponding call, including restrictions on previous employment or training periods at the host institution.
 Research excellence: Demonstrated scientific productivity with peer-reviewed publications, including at least one first-author paper, and a clear trajectory aligned with cancer biology, immunology, genomics, or computational biology.
 Incompatibilities and funding restrictions: Applicants must not hold or have previously held a comparable postdoctoral contract funded under the same or equivalent national/regional programs, in accordance with Sara Borrell and Beatriu de Pinós regulations.
 Legal and administrative compliance: Candidates must be eligible to sign an employment contract in Spain and comply with all administrative requirements of the funding body, including those related to FSE+
