Application for a Master Fellowship
within the PRR Project “Vertical Algas”

Applications are invited for a Master Fellowship, within the scope of the project entitled “Pacto da Bioeconomia Azul/ Vertical Algas”, Sub-Project 3-Alto Valor: Desenvolvimento de aplicações inovadoras e de alto valor para os mercados da Nutracêutica e Cosmecêutica”, funded by the “Programa de Recuperação e Resiliência” (PRR).

Scientific Area: Biological Sciences / Biology.

Academic degree: Master in Biology and related areas. The Master's average must be equal to or greater than 15 points (0-20 scale).

Other requisites: 
• More than 2 years of laboratory experience in the field of microbiology;
• Experience handling marine microorganisms and/or filamentous fungi, namely isolation and characterization (phenotypic and molecular);
• Experience in the evaluation of the antimicrobial activity of natural extracts will be valued;
• Excellent planning and organization skills;
• Highly proficient in spoken and written English;
• Strong motivation to pursuit a PhD
• Being enrolled in a PhD, or in a non-academic degree course, until the signature of the contract, in accordance with Article 6th of “Regulamento de Bolsas de Investigação da Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, I.P. from FCT”, law in force.

Working Plan: The work plan is part of a project that aims at developing new antimicrobial therapies focused on the production and isolation of bioactive compounds extracted from macroalgae collected from the Portuguese coast and their effects on clinical relevant eukaryotic and prokaryotic organisms.

Working Place: The work will be carried out in the Applied and Environmental Mycology laboratory at ITQB NOVA, under supervision of Professor Cristina Silva Pereira.

Duration of the fellowship: The fellowship will have the duration of 6 months, non renewable, expected to start in January 2026, on a full-time basis, according to according to Fellowship Regulations of Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia, I.P.

Stipend amount: 1309.64€, according to the table of values of grants awarded directly by the FCT, I.P. in the Country (https://www.fct.pt/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Tabela_valores_SMM_2025.p… ) and payment will be made, monthly, through bank transfer.

Selection procedure: The evaluation procedures will be based on the analysis of the candidates (1) Motivation Letter that should include a short statement describing your research experiences to date and your particular interests, and your qualifications related to this position (no more than 1 page in length), (2) Curriculum vitae, and (3) feedback provided by the two references indicated (it is mandatory to provide the references’ email contacts). Short-listed candidates (top ranked) will be interviewed (in English). The curriculum evaluation (points 1-3) and the interview will weight 50% each.

Notification of candidates: All the candidates will be informed of the final result by e-mail.

Deadlines and procedures for complaints and appeals: If the result is not favorable, the candidates have a period of 10 working days, after the disclosure of the results, to comment, if desired, in a prior hearing of interested parties, in the terms provided for in the Code of Administrative Procedure.
