Offer Description

The Holomicrobiome Institute: Our Ambition
We are building a national public-private innovation program focused on the power of microbiomes to improve human, veterinary, soil, and water health.
The program supports collaborative projects that move promising ideas from early-stage research (TRL 2–3) toward applied innovation (TRL 4–6) and real-world impact (TRL 7-9), supported by a data infrastructure that helps uncover deeper insights.
Central to this mission are:

  • Concept Development – Centrally initiating, coordinating, bundling, and integrating research and development that turns scientific insights into applied innovations.
  • Open Data Sharing – Building a federated data space to enable responsible data integration and cross-project learning.
  • AI & Modelling – Using shared data to power advanced models that help describe and predict microbiome functioning: moving from association to causation to understanding mechanisms and organizing principles.

  • Data stewardship and integration will form the core of the HMB, connecting data, methods, and people. To help realize this ambition, we are establishing a dedicated data integration team and are seeking a Researcher Architecture for the Holomicrobiome Data Space.
    About the Program
The institute and its activities are organized in four pillars:

  • Foundational activities focused on data integration. You will be part of the core team of this pillar.
  • Dedicated innovation projects that will provide the IP, proof of concepts, products, and show the potential for sustainable economic growth.
  • Living labs, valorization, and outreach.
  • Human capital and training.

  • About the Role
In today’s microbial research landscape, data is increasingly recognized as a strategic asset. However, its value depends on the ability to securely reuse data and perform analyses across organizational and disciplinary boundaries, without compromising privacy or intellectual property.
As a Researcher Architecturefor the Holomicrobiome Data Space, you will work on the architectural design and development of the HMB Data Space: the central digital backbone of the institute. This ecosystem will include hardware, middleware, software, data, models, analytical tools, and governance frameworks that together support microbiome research across domains.
You will explore key questions together with holomicrobiome researchers, industry partners, and other stakeholders:

    • Who controls the data, and under what conditions?
    • What analyses are permitted, and where can they be executed?
    • How does architecture influence analytical possibilities?
    • How can data be reused securely while safeguarding privacy and intellectual property?

This role places you at the forefront of both technological and societal innovation, focusing on secure, ethical, and responsible data reuse. The work is inherently multidisciplinary and requires close collaboration with academic, industrial, and public partners.
In the first phase, your focus will be on defining architectural specifications and developing core components of the data space, while actively engaging stakeholders to co-create a scalable, interoperable, and user-friendly infrastructure.
    Key responsibilities

    • Design and implement software solutions for data management, extraction, and analysis within the holomicrobiome data space
    • Define technical and functional specifications for the HMB Data Space, including architecture, standards, and governance models
    • Develop solutions that ensure data privacy and security while enabling secure data reuse across organizations
    • Explore and apply AI, machine learning, and big data technologies to derive insights from microbiome data
    • Analyze existing data platforms and portals to identify best practices in architecture, interoperability, UX/UI, and access control
    • Collaborate with domain experts to translate scientific and societal use cases into technical requirements

    Expected Deliverables

    • A clear requirements and architecture document for the HMB Data Space (technical, functional, and governance-related)
    • A development and collaboration plan identifying internal and external partners for implementation Holomicrobiome Institute Vacancy Data Space Architect September 2025
    • A high-level integration strategy for connecting diverse datasets, tools, and domainspecific solutions into a unified infrastructure

    Profile of the ideal candidate
You feel at home in multidisciplinary teams and enjoy working at the interface of technology, science, and implementation. You are proactive, curious, and motivated to translate emerging technologies into practical solutions with societal impact.
    You have:

    • A MSc in Computer Science or a closely related field
    • A strong background in software engineering and data architecture
    • Experience with data management and extraction tools, data lakes, data warehouses, and data modeling techniques
    • Experience with API development and containerization technologies (e.g. Docker, Kubernetes)
    • Familiarity with data portals, metadata catalogs, FAIR principles, and data governance models
    • Experience with cloud data platforms (e.g. Azure, Google Cloud Platform) is a plus
    • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to connect technical and non-technical stakeholders

    What we offer

    • A meaningful, visible role in shaping a microbiome data space to accelerate innovation across sectors and domains
    • A dynamic, purpose-driven environment at the interface of science, business, and policy.
    • Collaboration with leading academic institutions, SMEs, corporates, and government bodies.
    • A collaborative team culture where people share ideas, knowledge and success • Appointment of 0.6 – 1.0 FTE for initially one year with the possibility of extension (both duration and size of appointment, depending on the plan). Starting date is as soon as possible
    • Salary depending on years of experience: scale 11 or 12 CAO – UNL
    • 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% end-of-year bonus
    • Flexible working conditions
    • Starting date: as soon as possible
