Project Context
We seek a Postdoctoral Researcher to develop decision-support tools for decarbonizing mobile mining equipment. You will join an international multidisciplinary team. You will apply simulation, multi-objective optimization, and data-driven analytics to evaluate and compare material intralogistics handling alternatives—such as in-pit crushing & conveying, trolley-assist systems, and battery-electric trucks—in strip mining operations. This research is part of OCP’s Strategic Business Unit (SBU) Mining initiative to achieve net-zero Scope 1 emissions, aligning with the company’s roadmap for sustainable mining operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Literature Review & Case Definition
- Systematically survey decarbonization technologies in material intralogistics handling and decision-making approaches in mining.
- Select and characterize a strip mining case study; lead data collection and scenario design.
- Techno-Economic & Environmental Analysis
- Compare material intralogistics handling alternatives (IPCC, trolley assist, battery trucks, etc.) via life-cycle cost and emissions modeling.
- Simulation & Optimization Framework
- Build and validate a dynamic simulation model of mine haulage operations.
- Integrate multi-objective optimization to explore trade-offs across cost, emissions, and productivity.
- Decision-Support & MCDA
- Implement a machine-learning-driven multi-criteria decision analysis to rank and select optimal decarbonization pathways.
- Collaborate with industry and academic experts to ground-truth results.
- Dissemination
- Publish in top journals and present findings at international conferences.
- Contribute to workshops and stakeholder briefings on sustainable mobility in mining.
Qualifications
- PhD (awarded or imminent) in Industrial Engineering, Operations Research, Mining Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Strong track record of publications in simulation, optimization, or industrial engineering.
- Proficiency in Python and simulation tools (e.g. AnyLogic, Arena) and optimization solvers (Gurobi, CPLEX).
- Solid background in decarbonization modeling, logistics, and techno-economic assessment.
- Experience with multi-criteria decision making and mining operations is a plus.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
