Further Information

The objective of this project led by Università degli Studi di Enna “Kore” (UKE) is to activate a network among university, research institutions, healthcare facilities, associations, and SMEs to develop collaborative, non-invasive, and low-cost digital tools for the early and reliable diagnosis of neurodegenerative disorders and the monitoring and evaluation of treatments or rehabilitation. The incidence of neurodegenerative disorders is also characterised by cultural and environmental factors, thus a comparative analysis between similar populations but with different lifestyles (Sicily and Malta) is expected to improve the understanding of etiopathogenesis while providing an opportunity to compare the diagnostic, therapeutic and assistance approaches used in the two countries.

The project will adopt an interdisciplinary approach, involving doctors, physicists and computer engineers, creating cooperation among research and health institutions, associations and SME’s. The expected changes brought about by this project concern optimising diagnosis and treatment through artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms applied in virtual reality (VR) environments using data gathered from wearable and non-invasive sensors of different types suitably and purposely put together. The expected output is a pilot solution that can be easily personalised, deployed, and integrated into the processes of healthcare companies or institutions to offer a wider range of more effective assistance services to their patients.

The RSO will be responsible for the execution of a number of tasks related to VERA and other research projects presently being undertaken by the Department of Mental Health, Faculty of Health Sciences. Further information may be obtained from the Project Leader, Dr Alexei Sammut at alexei.sammut@um.edu.mt .

The main duties and responsibilities of the appointee will consist of the following:

  • research and development activities related to the project;
  • produce deliverables, write technical documentation, and prepare related reports within the stipulated time frames as specified in the project description of the Grant Agreement;
  • work on the project workplan sub-tasks, which, taken together, meet all the project objectives on time;
  • work flexible hours, so long as the pre-agreed sub-tasks are delivered on time and to acceptable standards, while keeping records of the actual time taken, on a task-by-task basis;
  • keep detailed progress reports and abide to all the conditions imposed by the project’s Grant Agreement;
  • assist in the dissemination process with the relevant stakeholders via workshops/seminars and work with other research officers to jointly prepare publications and/or patents;
  • organise and attend regular project internal meetings and consortium meetings;
  • travel and attend meetings/conferences as the need arises;
  • assist in the preparation and writing of scientific publications, and
  • perform any other project-related task as instructed by the project coordinator and key experts.

The appointee will be expected to work primarily in the sites where data collection will be carried and/or at such places and during such hours as may be determined by the Project leader.

The selection procedure will involve:

  • scrutiny of qualifications and experience claimed and supported by testimonials and/or certificates (copies to be included with the application).
  • shortlisting; and
