The University of Macau (UM) is an internationalized research-oriented comprehensive public university in the Macao Special Administrative Region (MSAR) located at the west bank of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA). The GBA is rapidly developing into one of the leading technology and innovation hubs of the world. In addition, UM is currently establishing a campus in the Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin, which is expected to be operational in 2028. The Faculty of Law (FLL) invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor in the area of Global Legal Studies, with a particular focus on Legal Artificial Intelligence.

The Faculty of Law of University of Macau is the oldest law school in Macao and plays a very important role in preparing jurists who are familiar with Macao S.A.R. legal system, as well as, educating jurists who are competent in legal research and practices in Macau law, international law, comparative law and law and technology. The Faculty of Law presently offers undergraduate degrees and postgraduate degrees to both local and international students. More details about the Faculty are available at https://fll.um.edu.mo/ .

Qualifications

Applicants must hold a PhD in Law or Computer Science. Candidates with a doctoral degree in Law should demonstrate a strong research record in the field of legal artificial intelligence. Candidates with a PhD in Computer Science are expected to have substantial research and development experience specifically related to legal AI. Preference will be given to applicants who have teaching or research experience in legal artificial intelligence and can provide compelling evidence of outstanding research accomplishments. Such evidence should include publications in internationally recognized, peer-reviewed journals and conferences.

The selected candidate is expected to assume duty in 2026.

Remuneration

A taxable annual remuneration starting from MOP855,400 (approximately USD105,600) will be commensurate with the successful applicants’ academic qualification and relevant professional experience. The current local maximum income tax rate is 12% but is effectively around 5% - 7% after various discretionary exemptions.
