Offer Description

[Background of the recruitment and description of the project]
* Background of the recruitment and description of the project
The Shimamoto Lab at the National Institute of Genetics (NIG), Japan, conducts interdisciplinary research on early embryogenesis by integrating biophysics and developmental biology. We have recently discovered that mouse embryonic nuclei undergo profound structural and mechanical changes during a critical developmental window associated with the transition from the maternal to the zygotic program. Further, these nuclear changes are promoted by nuclear autophagy, and that nuclear softening and plasticization are essential for facilitating transcriptional bursts of embryonic genes required for normal development.
This position seeks a postdoctoral researcher who will proactively pursue experimental research building on these findings. Key research areas include: (i) elucidating the physical and structural properties of the nuclear lamina and the regulatory pathways governing nuclear autophagy in embryos; (ii) analyzing transcriptional activity and genome dynamics within the nucleus; and (iii) developing techniques for the artificial manipulation of nuclear structure and mechanics.
This project is partially supported by the JST CREST program, “Development of Super-Biological Tissues through Chemical Catalysis-driven Cell Fate Engineering,” and is expected to expand into multifaceted research through collaborations with experts in chemical biology, cancer and developmental biology.
