At the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Solid State Physics we know our technologies like the back of our hand. Because we are one of the few scientific institutions worldwide to conduct research along the entire semiconductor value chain and on tailer-made synthetic diamonds. Whether high-frequency circuits for communications technology, voltage converter modules for electromobility, laser systems for measurement processes, or innovative hardware and software for quantum computers and quantum sensors: we develop tomorrow's technology in-house for a sustainable and secure society. When will you join us?
In the field of quantum technology, the institute is working on the realization of a quantum computer based on color centers in diamond. We use nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers as qubits, which are created during diamond growth via micorwave-assisted CVD, and characterized and controlled using in-house experimental set-ups.
Within the scope of this position, we are seeking a student research assistant to contricute to program and implement a quantum register for the execution of quantum algorithms based on NV centers. The focus is on hardware-oriented software development, particularly on the control and synchronization of the involved electronics via the software framework Qubi, as well as on the processing and evaluation of measurement results.
What you will do
- program a quantum register for the execution of quantum algorithms on NV centers in diamond
- develop hardware-oriented software to control experimental electronics (e.g., pulse generators, microwave sources, and detection hardware)
- synchronize multiple devices within complex measurement sequences
- implement and automate measurements and control protocols
- process, analyse, and evaluate experimental measurement data
- document the developed software and system architecture
What you bring to the table
- enrolled student in the field of computer science, physics, electrical engineering or a similar subject
- very good programming skills in Python, ideally with experience in hardware- or object-oriented programming
- interest in quantum computing, experimental physics, and complex measurement systems
- good language skills in German or English
- enjoyment of scientific work and a structured, independent working style
- team spirit, motication, and openness to interdisciplinary collaboration
What you can expect
- modern laboratory equipment in a new laboratory building
- on-site programming support from experts
- flexible time management that fits your studies
- writing of Bachelor or Master thesis possible
- collaboration in an interdisciplinary team, including working on current projects with clear objectives
- an open and team-oriented corporate culture that offers you the opportunity to contribute your own ideas
- diverse and exciting tasks in the environment of an internationally renowned research institution
- Frelo station (bike renting system) and parking spaces with charging stations
The position is initally limited to 12 months. The monthly working time is 40-80 hours. We value and promote the diversity of our employees' skills and therefore welcome all applications - regardless of age, gender, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion, ideology, disability, sexual orientation and identity. Severely disabled persons are given preference in the event of equal suitability. Remuneration according to the general works agreement for employing assistant staff.
With its focus on developing key technologies that are vital for the future and enabling the commercial utilization of this work by business and industry, Fraunhofer plays a central role in the innovation process. As a pioneer and catalyst for groundbreaking developments and scientific excellence, Fraunhofer helps shape society now and in the future.
