Postdoc (m/f/d) in the field of Dynamics of quantum materials

Updated: about 2 hours ago

The Max-Born Institute for Nonlinear Optics and Short Pulse Spectroscopy (MBI) conducts basic research in the field of nonlinear optics and ultrafast dynamics arising from the interaction of light with matter and pursues applications that emerge from this research. It develops and uses ultrafast and ultra-intense lasers and laser-riven short-pulse light sources in a broad spectral range in combination with methods of nonlinear spectroscopy. The spectral range includes in particular XUV radiation and soft x-rays, where experiments at in-house sources are complemented with the use of accelerator driven sources such as free electron x-ray lasers. With its research, MBI fulfils a national mission and is an integral part of the international scientific community.

The Max-Born-Institute invites applications for a

Postdoc (m/f/d) in the field of Dynamics of quantum materials

Job profile:

We seek applicants for a 1-years postdoctoral position working in the group of Prof. Dr. Sangeeta Sharma, “Dynamics of quantum materials”, at the Max Born Institute and Freie University (FU) Berlin. The work will be carried out together with Dr. J. Kay Dewhurst (at the Max Planck Institute Halle).

Requirements:

We are looking for highly motivated and talented candidates with a strong background in physics and a fascination for exploring the non-perturbative interaction of light and matter at the ultrashort times of attoseconds to femtoseconds. The project will involve working with first principles time dependent density function theory (TD-DFT, as implemented in the Elk code) [1-3]. A background including experience in coding and/or computation with ab-initio ELK software is sought for.

Offer:

The researcher position is available at the earliest possible date. This is a postdoctoral position for 1 year. The payment is according to the German TVöD salary scheme for scientists in public research institutions.

Applicants from backgrounds that, historically, have not been strongly represented in the physical sciences are in particular encouraged to apply for this position; we welcome applications from all qualified candidates, regardless of gender. MBI supports the reconcilability of family and working life and is certified by the audit workandfamily (audit berufundfamilie) as a family-friendly employer. We are dedicated to advancing women’s careers and strongly encourage women to apply. When candidates have equal qualifications and skills preference may be given to women, provided there are no overriding considerations in favor of another candidate. We also welcome applications from qualified individuals with disabilities and those with equivalent status, and we look forward to applications from international candidates.

The project can begin at any time between April 2026 and May 2026. Interested candidates should apply with CV and names of two Referees. Please upload your application, including cover letter, curriculum vitae, certificates and description of previous professional activities electronically  by email (Sangeeta.Sharma(at)mbi-berlin.de or sangeeta.sharma(at)fu-berlin.de ). The application deadline is May 1st , 2026.

For further information about the position, please contact Ms. Prof. Dr. Sangeeta Sharma (Sangeeta.Sharma(at)mbi-berlin.de or sangeeta.sharma(at)fu-berlin.de )
