Offer Description
Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences
Fully funded Postdoc position (f/m/x) for Collaborative Research Centre (CRC) 1678
Institute of Biochemistry | Riemer Lab
We are one of the largest and oldest universities in Europe and one of the most important employers in our region. Our broad range of subjects, the dynamic development of our main research areas and our central location in Cologne make us attractive for students and researchers from around the world. We offer a wide range of career opportunities in science, technology, and administration.
Within the framework of the Collaborative Research Centre (CRC) 1678 on “Systems-level consequences of fidelity changes in mRNA and protein biosynthesis” (https://crc1678.uni-koeln.de ), scientists from different research institutions in Cologne have teamed up to study how age, stress- and dysfunction-driven declines in the accuracy of mRNA and protein production affect cellular and organismal health. To this end, we combine integrated, systems-level approaches. The CRC1678 has been funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) since 2024.
In the framework of the CRC1678, the Riemer lab is seeking a postdoctoral fellow (f/m/x) to work on a project focused on the redox regulation of cellular proteome plasticity driven by differences in translation initiation. The Riemer lab (https://riemerlab.uni-koeln.de ) is part of the Institute of Biochemistry at the University of Cologne. We are interested in redox biology and mitochondrial biogenesis and their links to cellular metabolism, and employ a wide toolbox of biochemical and cell biological methods including state-of-the-art proteomics, transcriptomics, ribo-seq/ribosome profiling experiments, biochemical reconstitution approaches, and genetically encoded redox sensors.
YOUR TASKS
» Design and lead research projects to uncover molecular mechanisms of proteome plasticity during redox signaling and stress in mammalian cells
» Organize and troubleshoot your work independently
» Communicate results and experiences with the team in a transparent and professional manner
» Advise and mentor undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students
YOUR PROFILE
» A doctorate or Ph.D. in biology, biochemistry or a related field
» Experience in ribo-seq/ribosome profiling experiments or comparable, verifiable expertise in the study of translation, translational regulation, or ribosome function using experimental techniques are required
» Strong oral and written communication skills in English with the ability to clearly present research results
» Team player who can work independently
» Motivated, creative, and critical thinker with a flexible, and solution-oriented attitude
WE OFFER
» A multifaceted academic position in a stimulating research environment, offering multiple opportunities to broaden your expertise and where quality, professionalism, and team spirit are encouraged
» A full-time contract of up to 3 years (prolongation possible) in the CRC1678
» A diverse working environment with equal opportunities
» Support in balancing work and family life
» Extensive advanced training opportunities
» Occupational health management offers
The University of Cologne promotes equal opportunities and diversity. Women will be considered preferentially in accordance with the Equal Opportunities Act of North Rhine-Westphalia (Landesgleichstellungsgesetz – LGG NRW). We also expressly welcome applications from all suitable candidates regardless of their gender, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion, disability, age, sexual orientation and identity.
The position is available at the earliest possible date on a full-time basis (39,83 hours per week). The position is to be filled for a fixed term until 28 February 2029. If the applicant meets the relevant wage requirements and personal qualifications, the salary will be based on remuneration group 13 TV-L of the pay scale for the German public sector.
Please apply online with proof of the required qualifications without a photo under: https://jobportal.uni-koeln.de . The reference number is Wiss2512-11. The application deadline is 01.02.2026. For further inquiries, please take a look at our FAQs.
