Job Description
The Department of Psychology, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Southern Denmark (SDU) invites applications for a fully funded postdoctoral position in selective visual attention and color vision.
The position is available for up to 30 months and part of a project supported by the Independent Research Fund Denmark led by Professor Søren Krogh Andersen. The starting date is March 1, 2026, or as soon as possible thereafter.
Research environment
The postdoc will be affiliated with the Research Unit of Health and Cognitive Psychology. Another postdoctoral position with partially overlapping characteristics is being advertised for a separate project, and candidates meeting the criteria for both positions are encouraged to apply for both positions separately.
Project description
Color is a highly effective cue for directing attention, particularly when colors in a scene are dissimilar. However, there is currently no measure of color dissimilarity (distance) that accurately reflects selective attention. This project aims to develop a color representation in which the distance between hues accurately reflects the effectiveness of attentional selection between them. In a series of experiments using electroencephalographic (EEG) recordings of frequency-tagged steady-state visual evoked potentials (SSVEPs), the project will assess processing of attended and unattended colors in healthy adults performing a feature-based attention task while stimulus colors are varied systematically. The results will be highly relevant for basic research on visual attention and working memory and have practical applications, such as optimizing color selection for attentional purposes.
The successful candidate will be required to design, program and conduct EEG-experiments, analyze and interpret EEG and behavioral data and present results at conferences and in journal publications. This project is theoretically and technically sophisticated and a candidate with a solid understanding of color vision and strong analytic and quantitative skills (programming, digital signal processing, statistics) is sought.
Qualifications
Ideally, applicants for the position should satisfy the following requirements:
- PhD degree in psychology, cognitive (neuro)science, vision science, or a related field
- Research experience as evidenced by conference contributions and peer-reviewed journal articles in a field related to the offered position
- Expertise in color vision and/or visual attention and psychophysics
- Strong analytical skills, including the ability to design, implement, and analyze complex experiments
- Prior experience with EEG is a plus
- Good command of statistics
- Good command of Matlab (or similar programming languages)
- Very good command of the English language in spoken and written form
- Some knowledge of the Danish language is a plus
Candidates who are about to obtain these qualifications are also encouraged to apply.

Salary and terms of employment
The minimum postdoctoral salary will be DKK 37,132.08 (equivalent to approximately EUR 4,970.10) per month before taxes. An additional 18.07% of salary is paid into the pension scheme by the university.
The successful applicant will be employed in accordance with the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and AC (the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations).
