Job Description
What We’re Looking For
We seek a candidate with cutting-edge expertise in coatings technology, such as anti-corrosive and heavy-duty coating systems, and a strong ambition to contribute to a globally leading research and education hub. Collaboration is key—you will work very closely with colleagues in the centre and at the department and with partners at DTU, partner universities, and industry, primarily in Europe.
The Technical University of Denmark (DTU) invites applications for an Associate or Tenure Track Assistant Professor position in Coatings Science and Technology.
This role is part of our commitment to advancing DTU Chemical Engineering as a world-leading department in chemical and biochemical product technology, with a special focus on sustainable, high-performance heavy-duty organic coatings.
Your Role
You will contribute to both teaching and research:
- Teaching: Deliver engaging Bachelor, Master, and PhD-level courses in chemical and biochemical engineering, as well as industry-focused training programs. Bachelor courses are primarily taught in Danish, while advanced courses are in English. Most teaching takes place at DTU Lyngby campus, with additional responsibilities in our Industrial Master’s program in Kalundborg. We value innovative teaching methods, including the use of digital technologies.
- Research: Your research will be anchored in the Hempel Foundation Coatings Science and Technology Centre (CoaST), part of DTU Chemical Engineering. CoaST covers the entire value chain—from raw materials and formulation to testing, characterization and natural as well as accelerated exposure, to production and application—driving innovation in sustainable coatings.
Qualifications
- Assistant Professor: PhD degree (or equivalent) and potential additional experience from academia or industry.
- Associate Professor: PhD degree (or equivalent), academic qualifications equivalent to an Assistant Professorship, documented pedagogical training, and/or significant industry experience. A documented track record in leading research projects, supervising students, and securing external funding is an advantage.
We will emphasize:
- Teaching interest and ability within Chemical Engineering and Coatings Science and Technology
- International-level scientific production and research potential, including industry experience
- Potential to establish a research line and to attract external funding
- Ability to translate research into practical applications
- Ability and motivation to attract competitive external funding and build strong industry and academic collaborations
- Experience and/or clear potential to supervise and mentor MSc and PhD students and contribute to building research teams. Broad experience base, preferably with international exposure
- Capacity to foster internal and external collaborations
You must be responsible for the teaching of courses. DTU employs two working languages: Danish and English. You are expected to be fluent in at least one of these languages, and in time are expected to master both.
You will be assessed against the responsibilities and qualifications stated above and the following general criteria:
- Experience and quality of teaching
- Research experience
- Research vision and potential
- International impact and experience
- Societal impact
- Innovativeness, including commercialization and collaboration with industry
- Leadership, collaboration, and interdisciplinary skills
- Communication skills
Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union.
Starting date is 1 July 2026 (or according to mutual agreement). The position is a full-time position.

CoaST was established in 2017 through a generous donation by the Hempel Foundation. Since then, we have grown into a large and vibrant research environment with currently about 25 PhD students, 5 postdoctoral researchers and 4 faculty members, supported by a strong administrative and technical team. We work across the full coatings value chain and across multiple coating technologies, ranging from intumescent and fouling control coatings to anti-corrosive and other functional and heavy-duty coating systems. This breadth and scale places CoaST among the largest academic coatings research groups internationally.
Technology for people
DTU develops technology for people. With our international elite research and study programmes, we are helping to create a better world and to solve the global challenges formulated in the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals. Hans Christian Ørsted founded DTU in 1829 with a clear mission to develop and create value using science and engineering to benefit society. That mission lives on today. DTU has 13,500 students and 6,000 employees. We work in an international atmosphere and have an inclusive, evolving, and informal working environment.
