APPOINTMENT DETAILS
This is a full time (40 hours per week) position in Prof Bern Klein’s Research Group, based at the UBC Vancouver Campus. The successful candidate will be appointed for one year, with the possibility of renewal subject to work performance and funding availability. The anticipated start date is July 1, 2026, or a date to be mutually agreed upon.
Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The expected salary amount for the position is $80,000 per year.
The position is subject to final budgetary approval.

The Norman B. Keevil Institute of Mining Engineering at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver campus, invites applications for a Research Associate to work with industry partners and university researchers to carry out projects focused on Energy Efficient Comminution. The Research Associate works closely with researchers in carrying out research plans and projects in the program, coordinates and liaises between multiple industrial partners and manages research projects in conjunction with the principal investigators.
Faculty at the NBK Institute of Mining Engineering work with graduate students and staff to pursue research in all aspects of mining from technical to social and environmental. Support from alumni, corporations, foundations, students, parents and others assists the NBK Institute of Mining Engineering in conducting leading edge research, providing outstanding education and contributing to social and economic development in Canada and around the world. RESPONSIBILITIES
The Research Associate will:
• Manage partnership development with new and existing industry partners and manages relations with these partners.
• Coordinate engagement activities that support these partnerships, including facilitating meetings, project discussions, and other industry–university touchpoints
• Manage the execution of projects in the research program, including identifying key deliverables and ensuring their completion.
• Supervise and mentor postdoctoral fellows and graduate students and provide hands-on assistance.
• Perform other related duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
The successful candidate must hold a Ph.D. in Mineral Process Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field with a minimum of 5 years of experience. Applied extractive industry experience is an asset.
• The candidate must have experience with the operation of transcritical CO2 pulverization equipment.
• The candidate must have experience with comminution and ore mineralogy.
• A strong knowledge of thermodynamics and supercritical fluids.
• The candidate must have experience with the operation of mineral processing laboratory equipment
• The candidate must have a strong base of experience developing research projects.
• The candidate must possess excellent organizational skills, be attentive to details, and demonstrate strong management skills in handling multiple projects.
• The candidate should be highly collaborative, self-motivated, team-oriented, and have excellent oral and written communication skills.
