The Saskatchewan Firearms Office (SFO) has a new opportunity for proactive, results-driven individuals possessing office managerial operations and administrative work experience for the positions of Program Assistant, Saskatchewan Firearms Office located in Saskatoon.

The Firearms Secretariat is mandated to administer the Federal Firearms Act and ensure safe and proper regulated licensing, transporting and carrying of firearms within the province. The Program Assistant role is paramount in assisting the entire unit in achieving and enhancing public safety through safe, responsible and efficient firearms administration in Saskatchewan. Reporting to the Operations Coordinator, the Program Assistant is responsible for office management/administration within the SFO office. You will be client service orientated, providing services and information to Firearms Officers, the office, clients, third parties, businesses and organizations, and you will work closely with the RCMP, police and court services (providing legal documents). You will be an excellent multi-tasker with keen attention to detail and superb prioritization skills. You will have exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, both verbally and in writing, that assist in problem solving and resolving issues independently and under pressure with demanding timelines where effective judgement is paramount.

Our candidates of choice will be flexible and highly motivated individuals. Your knowledge of applicable computer hardware and software applications and terminology and ability to accurately compose, and/or edit a variety of correspondence will contribute to your success.

This position is also responsible for:

  • General administrative functions (e.g. purchasing office supplies, filing, incoming and outgoing mail processing, phone inquiries);
  • Providing information and assistance to the general public;
  • Developing various documents/reports and court/legal correspondence (policies, protocols, electronic/hard copy documents) under ATIP and Freedom of Information (FOIP), and storage;
  • Tracking and monitoring cases and incidents, expenditures and other;
  • Processing documentation (e.g. applications, decision letters, court outcomes);
  • Review, interpret policies/legislation and assessing risk;
  • Accounting and finance (expenditures, invoicing, tracking); and
  • Auditing services for continuous improvement processes.


Typically, to be successful in this position, you will have a certificate or diploma in Administrative Office Management, Business or Office Administration, and are competent in the following:

  • Office Management /Operational and Administrative support/assistance;
  • Records Management;
  • Financial and accounting;
  • Operation of various software programs, databases, systems and programs; and
  • Knowledge/familiarity of the Canadian Firearms Program services and the Firearms Act/relevant legislation.

Conditions of Employment: 
The following are required for this position or must be obtained within the first year of employment:

  • Completion of the Canadian Firearms Safety Course;
  • Hold a valid Possession and Acquisition License (PAL or RPAL);
  • Ability to obtain an RCMP Enhanced Reliability security clearance, criminal records check and background checks; and
  • Hold a current and valid driver's license.

  • Thorough, conscientious and attentive to detail to ensure accurate, timely and quality work;
  • Willing to work overtime or variable hours and undertake work-related travel when required; and
  • Able to engage in light physical activity or occasional moderate physical activity associated to reaching, climbing and lifting (up to 25 kg) if required.
