YOUR TASKS

The research group of prof. Bert Devriendt focuses on gut immunology and host-pathogen interactions at the intestinal surface. Our main interest is in pathogenic E. coli and the development of novel therapies to control these pathogens. In that context, we are looking for a motivated candidate to further develop our smart lactoferrin strategy and obtain a doctoral degree.
Antibiotics has saved millions of lives. However, the emergence and spread of antibiotic resistance endangers our ability to treat infectious diseases. Alternative therapies are much needed and host defense proteins might offer a solution. Our group has shown that the host defensin protein lactoferrin prevents growth and virulence of pathogenic E. coli. Using recombinant protein engineering, gut organoids, and animal models, you will perform research to increase the antimicrobial efficacy of this host defense protein and advance the development of novel efficacious antimicrobials in a vibrant and international research environment.
