About the Role: 
This role involves providing technical instruction, support, and other relevant services for teaching, research, and engagement programs. The position is crucial in ensuring that safe practices are followed in studio, workshop, and teaching areas.
In your new role of Technical Officer (Digital Fabrication), you will provide technical support for class activities and student project work associated with digital fabrication, including 3D printing, laser cutting, 3D scanning, and electronics.
You will work as part of a collaborative technical team, helping to establish and nurture a vibrant community of hands-on makers. This will contribute to a welcoming, student-centred environment that encourages curiosity, experimentation, and interdisciplinary learning. Your expertise and approachability will directly enhance the student experience and support learning through making.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Supervise and provide technical guidance to students in class, including the use of tools, equipment and the application of specific techniques.
  • Conduct safety inductions for staff and students, ensuring adherence to health and safety standards.
  • Prepare materials and organize workshop facilities for teaching and research.
  • Develop user documentation and maintain online information repositories.
  • Establish and update standard operating procedures for safety and equipment use.
  • Administer equipment loan processes.
  • Collaborate with academic staff to maintain class procedures and workbooks.
  • Maintain studios/workshops and equipment, including safety checks and repairs.
  • Install, test, and monitor equipment, troubleshooting as needed.
  • Advise on purchasing equipment and consumables for teaching and research.
  • Monitor and reorder materials and supplies to ensure availability.
  • Engage in professional development to stay updated on operational knowledge.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvement and recommend changes.
  • Undertake other related activities as necessary.
Who we are looking for/Selection Criteria: 

Technical support is provided for class activities and student project work associated with digital fabrication within the school.

Specific criteria


  • Demonstrated skills and experience in 3D prototyping and digital fabrication
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience operating and maintaining digital fabrication equipment such as laser cutters/engravers, 3D printers, 3D scanners, CNC mills, and electronics soldering equipment
  • Demonstrated experience with CAD, CAM and 3D modelling software such as Rhinoceros 3D, Fusion360, AutoCAD, and Blender
  • Knowledge and experience in the use of hand tools
Desirable
  • Experience with the use of microcontrollers (e.g. Arduino) and/or single-board computers and IoT devices (e.g. Raspberry Pi, Onion) and associated programming languages and software development tools
  • Experience with the use of Grasshopper for parametric design
Role Requirements:
  • As this is a continuing (permanent) role, you will require permanent work rights in Australia to be considered
