NASEM Biotechnology Regulatory Fellowship Program

The Biotechnology Regulatory Fellowship is a six-month, immersive program that provides early-career professionals with an opportunity to address regulatory challenges related to novel biotechnology products. Fellows will engage in hands-on work that bridges science, law, and policy to develop forward-looking regulatory approaches.

Through seminars, collaborative research, and a capstone project, Fellows will:

Explore evolving areas of biotechnology regulation and risk assessment;

Conduct horizon-scanning to identify biotechnology products that may pose future regulatory challenges;

Work in multidisciplinary teams to develop capstone projects with real-world application and agency impact;

Work alongside mentors from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and Food and Drug Administration (FDA);

Present their work to the Biotechnology Regulatory Fellowship Advisory Committee, mentors, and agency staff.

Fellows will also have access to educational activities including Academies’ convenings, Congressional hearings, think tank seminars, and industry conferences.


Award Details

Stipend: $70,000 (paid in monthly installments)

Duration: 6 months, full-time (37.5 hours/week)

Location: In-person in Washington, D.C.

Note: Fellows are not eligible for National Academies employee benefits.

Eligibility

Applicants must:

Be a U.S. citizen;

Hold an advanced degree in a relevant field

Have 3–5 years of relevant professional experience.
