PhD Studentship: Reuse of Decommissioned Wind Blades in Structural Engineering / Civil Engineering

Updated: about 3 hours ago
Location: Birmingham, ENGLAND
Job Type: FullTime
Deadline: 30 Aug 2025

About the Project

Main description:

Fiber-polymer composites are innovative ad sustainable alternative in construction due to their lightweight, excellent fatigue and durability, which are widely used in wind turbine blades, structural engineering exposed to offshore environments. However, the rapid growth of the wind turbine industry is expected to generate million tons of blade waste globally by 2050, creating a significant environmental challenge. This research aims to develop a sustainable engineering solution for reusing decommissioned blade in structural engineering. Structural performance will be assessed using finite element analysis and experimental work. Additionally, life cycle assessment will be performed to quantify environmental and economic impacts. This project is intended to improve structural durability, reduce material consumption, and support the UK’s net-zero goals.

Funding notes:

The position includes a full scholarship for UK-based PhD candidates and a half-scholarship for international candidates, in which the tuition fee could be mostly covered. To apply, please email your CV and brief research interest to Dr. Lulu Liu via l.liu.11@bham.ac.uk

Candidate Profile:

This position is ideal for candidates with a background in civil engineering, structural engineering and mechanical engineering. Applicants should demonstrate:

  • A strong interest in both experimental and numerical research.
  • Independence and dedication to high-quality research.
  • Excellent written, communication and presentation skills.
  • Basic knowledge of fiber-polymer composites.
