Application deadline: All year round
Research theme: Systems and Control

This 3.5 year PhD project is funded by The School of Engineering and is available to home students. The successful candidate will receive a tax free stipend set at the UKRI rate (£20,780 for 2025/26) and tuition fees will be paid. We expect the stipend to increase each year.
This project aims to develop a novel theoretical framework for nonlinear and robust control of dynamical systems from a phase perspective. You will have the opportunity to freely explore multiple research directions in nonlinear and robust control, including passivity, dissipativity and H-infinity control, and to collaborate with leading international experts as well as talented early-career researchers.
Applicants should have, or expect to achieve, at least a 2.1 honors degree or a master’s (or international equivalent) in a relevant science or engineering related discipline.
We are looking for a highly motivated candidate with a strong mathematical background, particularly in one or several of the following areas: multivariable control, nonlinear control, robust control, matrix analysis, and convex optimization. An ideal candidate is expected to have a strong interest in theoretical and innovative research.
To apply. Please contact the supervisor, Dr Chao Chen - chao.chen@manchester.ac.uk . Please include details of your current level of study, academic background and any relevant experience and include a paragraph about your motivation to study this PhD project.
